Celebrating 2 years of Laila Majnu: A movie that deserved to be loved by audience

Imtiaz Ali has a way of weaving magic on the silver screen. Though, his last movies when Harry met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal 2 were nor critically acclaimed, neither they were up to the mark; these failures still can’t make us forget that the director has given us gems like Highway, Jab we met, and Tamasha.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali’s brother Sajid Ali, Laila Majnu is a movie that can leave a hole in your heart. We all know that Imtiaz Ali movies are somewhat like poetry. He takes his audience to an existential crisis through his unique storytelling and leaves it to them to feel or contemplate its true meaning.

Though we as Indians have grown up listening to the story of Laila-Majnu but seeing it in a present-day set-up and that too in the lovely valleys of Kashmir is truly a visual treat. Kudos to first-time director Sajid Ali who has breathed a soul into the movie. Very unlikely to the new Bollywood music, the music given by Niladri Kumar will simply enthrall you and make you feel a range of emotions at the same time. Be it Arijit Singh, Mohit Chauhan, Atif Aslam, or Shreya Ghoshal, they all have given the performances of their life. Melodies of Tum, Aahista, Hafiz, and Oo Meri Laila will stay with you even when you have left the cinema hall.

Talking about acting performances, both Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri have done a splendid job as Majnu and Laila respectively but we must admit that it is Avinash Tiwary who truly stands out. The way he has portrayed Majnu AKA Qais Bhatt will hit you right in the gut. His portrayal as the quintessential prince charming as Qais Bhatt during the first half will sweep you right off your feet and his mental breakdown and transformation into a lunatic (Majnu) in the second half will baffle you but also leave you in some sort of awe. The actor has great potential and it is simply hard to digest that it is his very first movie as a lead. Tripti Dimri plays the lovely damsel, Laila, and looks lovely, beautiful, and showcases the right range of emotions in every single frame. The actors who were last seen in Bulbul together have soulful chemistry and no wonder, we all wish to see many more of them on the screen.

No wonder the movie has got great movie reviews for its brilliant screenplay, amazing cinematography, great acting performances, and music score. It was heartbreaking that it earned less than 2 crores at the box office during its release.
Though the movie is a hit on OTT platforms it is high time that we as audience realize the importance of giving importance to new talent and let them come to the fore if we wish to see something worthwhile.
