Reasons to Invest in Storage When You Move

The time has come. You are finally moving out of that great pad to some new digs with a little more room. Rather than hire cheap movers, you are going to do the job yourself. There is only one problem. The new place won’t be available for a couple more weeks, and you have to be out of your place at the end of the month.

Now what? Where is all your stuff going to live for the next few weeks?

You could try to cram your office full of boxes, but your boss is going to get tired of stepping over piles of bedding. Or let’s say you have a friend with a few extra square feet of storage. You might get away with cramming in a couple chairs or a desk, but not too many have room to stash an extra bed or two. Even at best, storing your stuff in someone else’s place can result in a strained friendship and lot of beers of apology … provided they didn’t get fed up and sell your stuff on Craigslist when you weren’t looking. For those who have a car, you could pack your life in there and leave it, which would last twenty minutes before it all got stolen and ended up on Craigslist when you weren’t looking.

What about self-storage? It sounds easy, but you have to worry about climate control so your stuff doesn’t get soggy, or soaked, the next time it rains. And how secure are some of those sites anyway? It would be a shame if someone took off with your collection of vintage poodle-shaped coffee mugs from a less-than-secure storage locker.

What is more, many self-storage outfits are designed with longer-term contracts in mind. Built to house the goods of the indecisive, or the perennially space-deprived, self-storage contracts are priced to last for months or years, rather than a matter of weeks or days between the start and end of a move.

So what is the solution? Storage services.

Weather, timing, security … it all adds up, and a proper storage service is the answer. With a storage service also comes the peace of mind that your life is secure while it waits for your new pad to be available. Couch-surfing while you wait for your new place to be ready is a big enough hassle on its own. It is better not to have to worry about where your stuff is in the meantime.

Offered by moving companies, storage services come bundled with another handy service; people who do the heavy lifting. Some will even pick up your stuff and take it away, keeping you from having to drive car-loads of your belongings all over town looking for a place to stash them.

Moving is exciting, but there can be hassles that come with it. Keeping these to a minimum can mean the difference between gliding serenely into you new life, and staggering into your new home with socks sticking out of your pockets. When your friends come to see your
new place, you want them bringing a bottle of wine or some appetizers, not your smelly box of gym shoes they have been holding onto for the last few weeks. Better to use a storage service and save everyone the trouble.
