Make Moving Out of State Less Stressful with More Preparation

Moving can cause a lot of stress in itself, but an out of state move can seem like an overwhelming task. Preparing in advance is always a good idea, but in the case of an out of state move, preparation is crucial to your success. An interstate move will certainly take longer and be more expensive than a local one, so be sure and budget accordingly. Talk with your moving company to see if they can help you with any issues specific to moving out of state, and create multiple lists to keep yourself organized. Here are a few ideas to help your out of state move go more smoothly.

Lighten Your Load

Because you're making a further move, you only want to bring items you truly need. If you haven't used something in the past six months to a year, you probably don't need it. Sometimes the expense of replacing something is actually less than it would be to move it. Go through each room of your house and collect items you plan to get rid of. Sale-able items can be reduced using resources such as Craigslist, or you can hold a moving sale. Many other items can be donated to charity or recycled. Once you've pared down your stuff, you'll easily be able to decide the best way to get what's left to your new home.

Start Packing Early

Once you've decided what to take with you, it's time to start packing. Items you don't need every day can sometimes be packed as early as two months in advance. Don't risk doing it at the last minute: even though you've pared down, you probably still have more stuff than you think. Remember to save essential items like bed sheets, utensils, shower curtains, and personal care items for last, as you'll need them up until moving day, and they'll be the first items you'll want to unpack. Also, save any valuable, irreplaceable, or sensitive items for last, as well, and make sure you move them yourself instead of leaving them to the movers.

Provide for Your Pets

Moving can be very stressful for your furry friends, too. Make sure all of your pets are up to date on vaccinations and other veterinary care. Ensure that they have appropriate travel carriers, and if they require any medications, make sure you have a good supply within easy reach during your move. If you will be driving, remember to stop every so often to allow your dogs to stretch their legs. Do research on pet-friendly hotels along the route you plan to go, in case you need to stop overnight. Don't forget to pack your pets' food and water in an accessible place, as well.

Plan to Transfer Utilities

You'll want to make arrangements for utility transfer as far in advance as possible. Sometimes it's a good idea to overlap the utilities in your new and old place for a day or two in case of delays or other unexpected circumstances. Sometimes you can handle the complete utility transfer online, but other times you may have to place a phone call or even show up in person. Find out what you'll need to do well in advance to avoid problems on moving day.
