Real Estate Exam - Tips for Passing the Test

by John B. Professional Writer
In other posts we have already detailed information about the preparation course for the real estate exam in order to obtain a real estate license.

But you probably have many questions about what the real estate exam will be like, what the content will be like, how much study is required, how to prepare, how much it costs, and other concerns.

Taking any kind of exam is stressful in itself. You have invested a lot of time and money to demonstrate all your knowledge in a few hours. But we advise you to look at it in a positive light, as the first big step in your career as a real estate agent. In this publication, we'll give you some tips on how to prepare for the exam, so you can build your confidence before you take the test.

Talk to real estate agents
As with any test, preparation and organisation are key to success. If the exam is stressful or nerve-wracking, talk to real estate agents who have recently obtained their license. This may help you relax, as well as being an excellent networking opportunity.

Take the real estate preparation course
It is important to check the real estate licensing requirements where you live or where you plan to work. You can easily sign up for a real estate exam preparation course online to help you with your preparations. There are also websites and books that offer additional preparation for passing your real estate exam.

The required courses leading up to the exam can take anywhere from 60 to 100 hours, but they depend on your individual timeline and your ability to complete the coursework.

Don't just study
Preparing for your real estate exam with a friend can help you gain information you might otherwise have missed, and it also helps hold you accountable for completing the exam in a timely manner. Having a partner to help you can even make the process fun.

Take practice tests
Set a timer and take a practice test to get the benefit of taking the test in real time. As you go through the process of studying, taking practice tests can also show you which parts of the test you might need to spend more time on.

Most states allow approximately three hours and fifteen minutes to complete the actual exam, although this may differ depending on how your state structures the test.

Answer practice questions
A great way to study can be to use a website like Quizlet, which allows you to enter information and test yourself. You can study the information you learn in your real estate test prep course and even share a set of information with friends so you can study together. You can also simply write information on note cards if you want to keep things old school, as physically writing down information can help some people retain information better.

Parts of the exam
The exam is divided into a national part and one regulated by the state/province in which you wish to be licensed. The exams are generally fairly similar across the board, but may require some knowledge of state specifics, so a real estate preparation course specific to your state may be beneficial. In other cases, you will need to contact the local Association of Realtors, Chamber of Realtors or Association of Real Estate Agents in the country or region where you live and find out their exam modality.

Answer the questions you know first
By skipping the questions you don't know the answers to and focusing first on the questions you do know the answers to, you assure yourself that you have time to answer the questions you are most likely to answer correctly. If you are short on time, you may also guess the questions that you would not have a chance to answer correctly anyway.
