6 benefits of a career as a truck driver

by John B. Professional Writer
The benefits of being a truck driver are obvious to many drivers. Beautiful rides on the roads of Europe, the feeling of freedom, transporting essential goods and products and so on. But even if you are already aware of some of the main ones, there may be truck driver benefits you had not considered before.

What are the benefits of being a truck driver?
Whether you are thinking about your career options for the first time or are looking for a new career then here are the main truck driver benefits.

1. Job security
Truck drivers are an important part of our workforce, and they are not going to disappear any time soon. There are now 150,000 drivers in the UK. Just a few years ago, there were 125,000. There are 143,000 trucks (incl bakwagens and tractor-trailer/trailer combinations) in the UK.

The statistics don't lie - the truck sector is a huge industry, and it will only continue to grow. One predicts average employment growth of 5% over the next 10 years. It is therefore safe to assume that truck drivers will remain in demand for the foreseeable future.

2. Stable pay
The purpose of a job is to be able to support yourself and/or your family. Therefore, one of the main benefits of a truck driving job is the salary. While the exact salary you receive will depend on the type of route you drive, or the type of cargo you carry, there is one thing you can count on: a steady salary.

3. Freedom
As a truck driver, freedom is one of your main advantages. You can drive on the road safely and not sit in a cubicle all day. Your office is the road, you are not stuck with endless meetings and paperwork, and no one is looking over your shoulder while you work. Enjoy your freedom on the open road!

Of course, this freedom also extends to the kind of routes you drive. Even if you work a fixed schedule and route, the types of routes you drive during your career can vary greatly depending on what your skills are; you can expand your skills through training and then apply for different positions if you feel the need for change. For example, as a truck driver, you can drive shorter routes where you can be home every night, you can drive longer routes where you have to be away for a few days at a time, or you can drive even longer international routes where you are on the road for a week or more. You have the freedom to choose what you prefer.

4. Travel
Again, depending on the type of route you drive, there may be the opportunity to travel and see parts of Europe you would never have seen otherwise.

There are thousands of interesting places to visit in Europe. However, many people cannot afford to travel extensively. As a truck driver, you get the chance to see places you might not otherwise visit. If you choose a long-distance route, you will also meet a wide variety of people in different parts of the country. Some drivers can travel together with their someone, and sometimes even pets come along for the trip! Doesn't sitting comfortably in your cab sound better than staring at a blank wall all working day!

5. Time to learn
Sometimes the long hours truck drivers spend on the road are seen by outsiders as a bad thing. But the reality is that all those miles on the road give you something many people would kill for: time. As a truck driver, you can use this to your advantage in several ways, but one of them is that you can use it to expand your knowledge. This doesn't even have to be strictly truck-related education. Many truck drivers listen to books on tape or various courses or other similar educational content while driving.

Of course, you can also just use this time to listen to your favourite music or even just enjoy the silence and sounds of the road.

6. Grow
An important aspect of any job is the opportunity to grow. And one of the main advantages of being a truck driver is that the opportunities for growth are numerous. There are many ways to grow in a job like this - whether it's getting another position in a trucking company or tweaking your driving skills through various endorsements that open you up to better-paying jobs.
