Ramesh Abhishek: The Man With a Tainted Past

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
Ramesh Abhishek, the Bihar cadre IAS officer, has been known to be misusing his powers and manipulating the system for personal gains. Abhishek’s lackluster performance can be traced throughout his career while he was busy playing puppet to his political godfathers—first as Lalu’s henchman and then dancing to Chidambaram’s tunes as the FMC chairman. Being a confidante of former chief minister of Lalu Prasad Yadav during his heydays, he helped Lalu’s goons in booth capturing during elections as he held the position of the district magistrate. Post his assignment in Bihar, Ramesh’s immediate stint in Delhi got him closer to P. Chidambaram and the rest, as they say, is history.

Even as the chief of erstwhile commodity market’s regulator Forward Market commission (FMC), Ramesh Abhishek killed more than 10 lakh jobs to favour a certain group of vested interests, closely related to his political masters.

As the secretary of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPPIIT) since 2015, his policy frameworks have dissuaded entrepreneurs and businessmen within and outside India from regarding India as a conducive business environment. This can be substantiated from the fact that in the last few years, only a handful of start-ups have flourished, and the entire start-up industry is facing turbulent times. It is evident that the start-up India initiative, under his stewardship, has failed to pick up.

Needless to say, Abhishek has failed to implement much bolder initiatives to encourage entrepreneurial zeal and open doors to a conducive business environment.
