Plant A Stunning Hedge For To Compliment Your Property

People plant hedges for all sorts of reasons, the most frequent reason being to mark the boundary of the property and separate it from other plots. As well as creating a visual and physical barrier, hedges can be highly effective for providing privacy, shade and disguising unsightly areas in a natural way.

Your reason for planting a new hedge should help you to choose the most suitable type of plants for the job. If you plan to grow a tall hedge on your property, it is wise to check the rules with your local planning office first. You will of course want plants that appeal to you visually, but you must also think about how much maintenance your hedge will need and think about the conditions normal for your area. Check what soil type you have and select plants that are going to thrive without difficulty to make sure you avoid plants that will be demanding or potentially fail.

If you plan to buy plants from your local garden centre or plant nursery there will undoubtedly be an informative staff member available to offer you some practical advice and information regarding which plants to choose. Failing that, look online for detailed information regarding any plants you are thinking about using.

If you are ordering a bulk amount of plants, enquire about delivery, but you will need to leave yourself plenty of time to carry out your preparation work first. Ideally you will be ready when your plants arrive because this will give them the highest chance of survival.

All you will need for the job is a strong fork, a spade and a string-line to use as a guide. If you don't own a string line, don't worry because you can make one easily by taking two small stakes and tying a long length of cord or string to each one\your own. Give your new plants a boost by adding quality compost to soil prior to planting.

The first, and hardest element of your preparation work will be to dig a suitable sized trench for the new hedge. Ideally you should dig around 2ft by 2ft, removing all rocks and larger stones , then piling the soil in a mound along the side of the trench so that it can be replaced easily once the plants are in.

As soon as the trench has been dug, you are ready to get your plants. Soil types vary a huge amount , making it very difficult to guess how long digging your trench could take. Generally, you should position hedge plants 2ft apart along the trench, using the string-line to ensure you end up with a straight row. Fill your trench with the loose soil and your job is complete, all you need to remember is to water regularly during dry spells to make sure the roots cannot dry out.
