When planning an attractive screen or hedge to compliment
your property, why not opt for one of many gorgeous hedge plants available. One
of the most popular plants used to create a hedge is Leylandii.
An unbelievably fast rate of growth has made this plant very
popular. In optimum weather conditions it will grow between three to four foot
per year. When you want to create a screen quickly, this is a huge advantage,
because you will not have to wait long! Whilst there are several types of
Leylandii to choose from, the two most popular varieties are the Green and Gold
Leylandii. Green Leylandii offers the fastest vertical growth whereas the Gold
variety is slower as it shoots out plenty of horizontal branches provides a
more dense coverage. Through combining the varieties together, you can achieve
great visual appeal.
Although it is not necessary to use fertilisers to feed this
robust plant variety, due to its fast growth, it is very important to prune the
trees periodically and maintain them well for best results.
It is a good idea to give plants a light prune between two
or preferably three times annually if you want it to look immaculate and
healthy. If you see any sign of disease on your plants, get advice from your
local plant nursery. At the end of the spring and then the autumn season is the
perfect time for pruning. Avoid clipping further than the green foliage because
if you expose the woody centre you will not get new growth on it. Bare patches
will affect the look of your hedge.

Once you have purchased your plants, try to get them as
quickly as you can rather than leave them sitting in pots. When planting any
variety, you will achieve optimum results through preparing the ground
thoroughly. Pruning will be the only care Leylandii requires after planting.
Adding a quality fertiliser could make a slight difference to the very initial
growth, but it is not actually necessary with this type of plant.

In some places disputes have arisen over the extreme height
of neglected Leylandii. Feuding neighbours have let their Leylandii grow as
much as 50 ft! This may or may not be something for you to consider so it is
well worth checking with your local Council to see if there is any height
restriction in place.
