Sometimes you struck gold when that perfect moniker for your new cat just pops up right into your mind. Most of the time however finding the right name requires patience, paying attention and a little luck. Names can be either traditional or offbeat given your choice. Picking a name is difficult sometimes but with the correct tips and creative strategies you can land up with the best one.

Here are some things you need to keep in mind while picking a cat name-

  • Take your time to choose the name; you don’t have to commit to one right away. At first you can pick your top 3 names and then test them out for a week. Observe which name your cat responds to more. This way they will feel more secure in their new environment and will be easier to train.
  • Choose a practical name that is not too long or embarrassing. Remember, a cat’s name is for life and shouldn’t be changed later on.
  • Keep the existing name of an adult cat you are adopting even if you don’t like it. It will keep the transition to a new environment easier and they will be more comfortable hearing their old familiar name. Kittens are more adaptable and will accept a new name more easily.
  • Avoid words as names which are often used in the house such as commands or names of family members.
  • As a notorious cat lover T.S.Eliot famously wrote in the naming of cats- “They really have three different names. The first is a sensible name the family uses day to day and the second is a unique name that is more dignified and has never belonged to more than one cat. The last is a mysterious name to which the cat herself knows but will never confess.”

There are a number of approaches and here is a list of some name suggestions that you can pick from-

  • Get a baby name book or look for names on the internet. You can choose human names like names of popular celebrities. Names like ‘Beyoncé’, ‘Elvira’ or ‘Selena’ suit for babies just as real ones.
  • Find a name that suits their personality or a behaviour trait. For e.g. ‘Itchy’ is apt for a cat who scratches, ‘Swagger’ for someone who is sassy ‘Footloose’ is apt for a wanderer and ‘Cupid’ seems appropriate for an affectionate kitty.
  • You can also pick a name based on their physical characteristics and appearance. A cat’s colouring, fur patterns, shape and size provide an endless array of ideas for names. ‘Fluffy’ would suit a long-haired breed, ‘Spot’ would suit a Calico, and ‘Raya’ for a striped one and ‘Amber’ seems natural for a Tabby.
  • Use a pair of names if you have two new female cats or kittens. ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ or ‘Krista and Kara’ are few examples.
  • Choose a cat name that is not too common like ‘Ginger’ or ‘Felix’ or ‘Sugar’ which is likely to be the name of a cat right in your neighbourhood. Keep it unique and trendy like ‘Quaso’, ‘Corpat’ and ‘Bombaloria’.
  • Since any name is a reflection of yourself you can also choose something personal or something you are passionate about to name your cat. It can be your favourite author, singer, a place you have visited, your favourite music band. Your perfect name might just be on this list. Popular relatable names include ‘Floyd’, ‘Banjo’ or ‘Yoda’.

If you are still totally stumped you can also invite family and friends and hold a naming contest for your new furry friend and choose from their creative suggestions. Or you’re looking for even more girl cat names, try our online name generator for other options. Happy searching!
