The best sequence to begin painting is by doing all the woodwork first.  Then move onto the walls. When applying coats think about a uniform covering and let your strokes follow the grain. If you are rolling the walls make a series of long strokes in one direction which distributes the paint evenly.

To keep from overloading the brush you should dip the bristles less than halfway into the pot. Tap the side of the pot gently to remove any excess paint.  Draw the brush straight up and down in a line to level the paint off. A final light upward stroke will smooth out any brushstrokes. You need to keep your brushes thoroughly cleaned by washing immediately with warm water and a mild soap. A nylon scouring pad will loosen any stubborn paint on the outside of the brush.
