How to Protect your Home
To protect your home and to give you peace of mind it is a good idea to periodically change your locks. Follow these steps and you can do the job quickly and easily:
1. Lock-sets
You ideally need to get the details off the old lock as this will make it much easier to get a new lock that fits and works properly. This is often found on the latch or on the key itself and although you won’t need an exact replacement, the brand and style will help you get a positive match. Measure the size of your doorknob as sometimes the exterior will be larger than the interior lock-set Most lock-sets are available in two standard sizes so measuring now will ensure you get the right size. You can get help from your local handymen which perform odd jobs services in your area.
2. Interiors
To remove the interior knob you should release the springs that hold the knob in place. It should come away easily, leaving the decorative cover behind. In some cases you may have to remove the interior cover before you can access the springs on the knob. If the screws are visible once you have taken the knob off, you can unscrew them and put them aside. If you cannot see the screws they may be hidden under a plate. Simply prise off this cover using a thin screwdriver and the locking mechanism will be underneath.
3. Lock & Latch Assembly
By unscrewing the two interior screws you will easily be able to pull each half of the doorknob away from the door. Don’t let the door close! On the side of the door are another two screws which need to be removed. Then take off the strike plate. Compare the new plates and if they are identical it is better to leave the old ones in place. Removing and replacing screws will weaken the hold in the door. Sometimes the new screws won’t bite so you may need to add a small piece of wood to make them align, or use slightly longer screws.
4. Replacements
If any part of the recess is uneven then you can chisel it out so that the new latch will fit. Once it is resting snugly you can leave adding the screws until later. If it won’t stay put, fit the screws now. Make sure the keyed section is on the outside and install the new lock-set Make sure the strike plate lines up with the new lock. Test the latch operation and the locking mechanism with the key and remember to leave the door open! Tighten any remaining screws and check that the doorknob opens and closes with ease.
5. Problems
If something goes wrong during the assembly process you may find it necessary to call out an expert! Your local handyman services will have the skills and the knowledge to be able to help you fix any problems you may have and ensure that your property is made safe and secure once more.
