Ontario’s Immigration Minister has formally requested his federal counterpart to increase the annual intake quota of economic immigrants under Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) – the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) – from 6,650 in 2019 to 13,300 in 2020; in order to meet local labor market requirements.

11 of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories run PNPs to nominate suitable foreign nationals for permanent residence. The federal government places a cap on the number of nominations that can be issued by each province or territory.

The OINP’s 2019 admission target has already been exceeded by 700 additional nominations extended in December 2019 – bringing the total number of OINP nominations issued this year to 7,350. While all PNPs were collectively allowed to nominate 61,000 immigrants for permanent residence in 2019, the limit for 2020 will be increased to 67,800. In recent years, the OINP has been allocated the maximum intake limit across all Provincial Nominee Program.
