Media has undergone different phases and is today found in a converged form where all kinds of different media are coming together. It is believed that three key inventions transformed the world;

-the phonetic alphabet,

-the printing press, and,

-the telegraph

A product of this new era is the ‘new media’. From latest music songs onlin to daily household item searches, there is no doubt that new media has practically connected the whole world through the cyber network but it is still quite fresh compared to older mediums such as the radio, or newspaper.

But, is the new media something really special or does it still need to develop further?

Here are the three arguments that throw light on this issue:

 

The Conflict

The majority of debates on new media often fall in two different extremes. For example, there may be some people who might tell you about the latest or top 10 social networking sites in India, but there will be an equal number of people who will argue with you about the harm in doing too much video chat on social networking and its use in your personal life.

 

Media-Time

Due to the easy availability of internet and social media, a concept of ‘’media-time’’ has been introduced in the human lives. This means that we have begun comparing old media versus the new media. For instance, one could compare traditional method of someone listening to the latest music songs on a website instead of a music cassette.

 

Newness of Products

New Media has developed a concept of ‘Newness of Products’. The commercialization of latest products is an example of it. Every other day one can witness the launch of new gadgets which are not much different than their previous version. And yet, people seem to be in a rush to buy these latest products. So, is it only about marketing and commercialization?

Although new media has given us new platforms to engage and share content with each other, it still is in a growing phase. To say that only new media is interactive by citing the example of smartphones or e-book readers would not be completely correct. It can be argued that books are equally (if not more) immersive and interactive.

 

But on the other hand, one cannot overlook the fact that new media has helped connect and empower the world like never before. A simple social media post even by an economically poor citizen of this country can reach to citizens of every class across the world.
