Best Use of Internet in Indian Social Networking Sites

by Tanvi Singh Senior Graphics Designer

Of all the biggest innovations in the modern human history, the Internet has been a wondrous development. The idea of instantly connecting and chatting with anybody anywhere in the world is phenomenal. Whether it is for pictures, movies or music, some of the popular social networking sites in India have adapted accordingly and are leading for further revolutionary changes.

21st-century dynamics

Different persons can have a different opinion on what constitutes the best use of the net. The early users might say that changing the look of a very plain looking desktop with refreshing images for wallpaper was perhaps the best use they could get. They might also inform that getting stock images free for their professional work was a major moment. Others could cite the availability of games on their desktops removing the need of purchasing a separate gaming console.

There could also be some people who experienced the changing face of computers with the changing millennia. The 21st century gave a new dimension to computers as it slowly discarded the use of floppy disks to digital CD’s and DVDs and then introduced the online streaming of movies and songs. The social networking sites saw this as an opportunity to jump from being a simple text sharing tool to an audio-visual medium of communication. It captured two of the biggest markets which are a source of entertainment for millions of Indians, i.e. Bollywood and Cricket. The easily available bollywood new songs and latest movies were then found and played on social sites.

Sharing is Caring

Perhaps beyond all these avenues of entertainment offered by the internet is the unique concept of ‘sharing’. The information which was previously considered as holy and sacred is now easily exchanged in the form of images (now with motion GIF), videos (that go viral), 120 character messages, lengthy social rants, etc. Sharing has become a skill which people have learned very quickly and now many of them have an expertise on how to share content and whom to target in it.

Gone are the days when one had to travel to internet access shops. Much like the telephone booths, these booths of internet had a computer for anyone willing to pay for their use. Termed as ‘cyber cafés’, these booths provided a very basic search engine service and chat messenger with email service. However, with the coming of cell phones with people could get to share anything anywhere with internet and cyber cafes became a thing of the past.

Spreading like wildfire over the past 7 years in its history of more than 20 years of public access, the Internet has grown leaps and bounds and today it has a reach to nearly 450 million users across the country. The best use of the internet is quite open to answers and explanations. For a country with more than 1.2 billion people, now is a very good time to observe and study the popular social networking sites in India to know how the society is being shaped by an invisible entity known as the internet.
