NATA 2015: Simple tips and tricks to crack the test

NATA entrance exam is not a super tough nut to crack if you start early and prepare the right way. Like any other entrance tests, NATA too requires hard work, dedication, focus, analyzing patterns, practicing and reading extensively, to score well. The competition for architecture programs in prestigious institutes are high due to limited number of seats, so pull up your socks and get ready for the battle. The test is basically divided into two parts – Drawing Section and Aesthetic Sensitivity Section. If you are up for NATA exam, here are few essential tips and tricks you could use to score well in the test:

Drawing Section

The drawing section in NATA exam tests a candidate’s drawing, imagination and observation skills. It also gauges a candidate’s sense of proportion & perspective and color & composition. It is a 2-hour test where an aspiring candidate needs to attempt 3 questions. He should use his imaginative and observation skills to draw something fresh or unique using his creative ideas. If you want to excel in this paper, practice is the only key to get there. You should practice on A4 size paper on a regular basis. The paper consists of three questions and each question focuses on some aspect of drawing. Below are the pattern of the questions:

The First question carries a weightage of 50 marks. You must understand the question exactly before starting to draw. Knowing the question will help you draw what the examiner is actually asking for. You must have the ability to sketch any given object proportionately and it must be visually appealing too. Ability to draw from memory about every day scenes and the capability to understand scales and proportions.

The Second question carries a total of 25 marks. This question will test your ability to create 2-dimensional composition, ability to utilize colors in a given composition harmoniously is critical to score better. Also you should know how to create logos using geometric or non-geometric figures.

The Third question of NATA exam also carries a total of 25 marks. You will require to create a 3-dimensional composition from geometric or non-geometric forms, and create effects of lights on objects. This last question will require a lot of understanding on your part about creating 3-dimensional and about lights and shadow creation.

Aesthetic Sensitivity Section

In this section you will get 40 MCQs which are designed to test your observation, perception and imagination, communication and creativity along with architectural awareness. You should be literally an expert in visualizing 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional drawings and able to identify different materials and objects based on their textural qualities. Also you must be good at analytical reasoning, doing imaginative comprehension, have great architectural awareness and mental ability.

To get a clear idea about the exam pattern, you must analyze previous 20 years’ question papers. Stay updated about new innovations in the architectural field, and know about the various architecture design and structures around India and the world. To increase your knowledge about architecture, you can read a lot of journals, magazines, and books on architecture. There is no negative marking so attempt all questions.
