Microsoft Promotes Bing search on Android through Outlook

If you are using Outlook on your Android smartphones, you might get to see an unexpected promotional pitch of Bing search (Microsoft’s search engine) on it.

Many Android users are reporting that they see “Bing search” in the long-press menu (Menu that you get to see when you select text) in Outlook. Once you click the “Bing search” option, it will open your browser and perform a Bing search using the words you have selected in the Outlook. Although it is a great feature, most people might not like this feature. Why? Because Google is the most popular search engine in the market, and most people like to use Google for search instead of any other search engine.

The Bing search option is not being shown to every user of the Outlook right now, and it also does not appear if you use other apps by Microsoft on your mobile. However, if you see it in your Outlook app, you can get rid of this option by uninstalling and reinstalling the Outlook app. Many people have reported that this trick has worked for them, and they can no longer see the “Bing search” option in their Outlook app.

Microsoft is using the built-in functionality of your Android to promote the Bing search by adding it in Outlook and is not compromising your device or any other Google policy. Despite all this, it would be tough for Bing search to survive, especially when we know most people don’t expect it to appear on their mobile and like to use Google search for performing a search on their mobile.

So why is Microsoft doing this? Well, the answer is they are most likely using it to increase the use of Bing search in the market. According to research conducted by StatCounter, Bing was used for only 2.8% of searches in June 2020. At the same time, Google was used for 91.75% searches in June 2020. This is really a big gap, and Microsoft must look for ways to reduce the gap if they want to survive in the long run. Therefore, it makes complete sense that Microsoft is suggesting Bing search to millions of Outlook users on Android for reducing the usage gap between Bing search and Google search.

Do you think Microsoft has taken the right step by promoting Bing Search on Outlook? If yes, then do let us know about it in the comment section below.
