Microsoft in a blog post has said that the company has introduced a new feature in the latest version of Microsoft Edge. The new feature introduced recently will help the users to prevent the nefarious downloads aiming to harm their devices and unwanted apps having the potential to damage the devices. The latest version of Microsoft Edge with the new feature can block the unwanted apps and downloads and will help speed up your devices. The feature will be provided by Windows Defender Smart Screen and will remain disabled by default settings.

The users can enable the settings anytime whenever they required by following the simple steps:-

  • First of all, the users need to choose the ellipses and then select Settings.
  • After then, the users will be required to move to the Privacy and Services section available in the settings menu and then click on it.
  • Now, when you will go to the section Services, you will be directed to the option Block Potentially unwanted apps and then click on it.

Microsoft Defender ATP has provided its list regarding the unwanted apps to be blocked but if the users wanted to customize it according to their threat intelligence, then they would be allowed to do so. The users can create indicators and manage it simultaneously for URLs, domains or IPs which need to be blocked. However, while doing so the users need to be careful regarding some factors such as the blocking of the IPs or URLs will rely on the component of Microsoft Defender ATP and should be supported on Windows 10, version 1709 or later.

It is equally important for the users to make sure that the Custom network indicators are enabled or not. If not, then the users need to enable it by going to the Microsoft Defender section.

  • Now, the users need to go to the Security Center and click on it.
  • Then, you have to move to the Settings and then Advance features.

Now, the users can create an indicator for URLs, IPS or domains following the below-given steps:-

  • You have to open the internet browser and then choose Settings and thereafter Indicators.
  • Now, you have to choose the domains, URLs or IP addresses and then choose the option Add indicator.
  • You will further need to specify the indicators in detail such as

Indicators: Along with specifying the details entity also define the expiry date of the indicator.

Action-Specify the action required along with providing the description.

Scope: Required to define the machine group scope.

  • After reviewing the details the users have to click on the Save option.

How to manage indicators

After going to the navigation pane, you have to choose the option Settings and then indicators.

  • Now, choose the tab of the entity required to be managed.
  • Further, you have to tap on the option Save after updating the indicator details.
  • If you wish to remove an entity, then tap on the option Delete.

Although, you have enabled the creation and managing of the block list based on your threat intelligence Microsoft provides its list of types of software that could be blocked. This software is categorized into six parts which are Torrent Software, Marketing, Crypto mining, Evasion, Bundling, Advertising and software having poor industry reputation. Moreover, the users should be download software from some trusted location to avoid any cyber threat. The users can download the software from the website of the publishers or the reputed app store and that too after through the reviews regarding the apps carefully.
