Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel Attend Couple’s Therapy
“The Martian” actor Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” went to couples therapy to work out their issues during a sketch on the show that aired Monday, Sept. 28 at 10:35 in Mountain Time Zone areas such as South Jordan, Utah. After initially walking on to the show dressed as that night’s guest Doctor Phil, Damon admitted to the audience that he’d been living in Kimmel’s dressing room for the past 12 years while waiting patiently to appear on the show. The show then cut to the therapy segment.
The ‘Feud’
Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel’s relationship issues date back farther than pioneers in South Jordan, Utah. Well, not quite. But since the earliest days of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the host joked that the show simply ran out of time for its final guest, Matt Damon. When Kimmel finally did book Damon on the show, he ran a recap of every time Damon had been mentioned previously, which was so long the show ran out of time. Since then the two have continued their feud, bringing in the help of celebrities from Sarah Silverman to Ben Affleck.
The Therapy Session
Kimmel and Damon talk out their feelings during a couples therapy session, with Kimmel playing the part of a verbally abusive partner who doesn’t try hard enough to get Damon on the show, while Damon reveals he’s been living in the “Kimmel” studio waiting patiently for 12 for years his chance to finally get on the show. The pair drops references to previous highlights of their feud and Damon’s past films, Damon claiming that “[H]e Bought a Zoo” specifically for the two of them and Kimmel chronicling the time Damon kidnapped him and took over the show.
The Breakthrough
Through their couples therapy session, the pair approach some kind of breakthrough; Damon admits he likes the show and Kimmel promises to “try harder” to get Damon on as a guest. Kimmel also promises Damon a small TV (but no Wi-Fi) for his tiny basement studio apartment. The segment ends with an awkward, and ultimately destructive, hug.
While Kimmel and Damon’s relationship woes were obviously staged and certainly not representative of the average couple in South Jordan or elsewhere, the couples therapy counselor took the cake. She could work at any therapist’s office, in South Jordan or on the East Coast. Kudos to you, therapist.
