Making the transition smoother: prepare your child for kindergarten

by Groshan Fabiola I try to cover as many topics as I can
If your child knows how to use the restroom without your help, follows simple instructions or directions, recognizes letters of the alphabet, gets along with other kids, has no problem when it comes to sitting still long enough to hear a story from beginning to end, enjoys listening to music or reading and handles emotions like a master, then you should definitely consider getting him ready for kindergarten. If your little one shows excitement when hearing the news, this is a good sign because the transition will be less difficult. On the other hand, you also have to be aware that your kid might not like your intentions, thus making the process more complicated. Regardless of your child’s reaction, the truth is that such a transition represents a huge milestone for both of you and calming first-day kindergarten tears becomes fundamental. Your kid is about to understand the meaning of independence and the importance of learning so you have the responsibility to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Before even finding a good creche or dropping your kid off to kindergarten, you have to help him acquire a few basic skills including tying his shoelaces, opening a juice box or lunchbox without making a mess, raising the hand when in need of something, knowing his name or his parents’ name, the address and the phone number in case of an emergency. Apart from the basics, as a parent, you also have to teach your child to take care of himself, be responsible for his things and his actions, engage in group activities and speak his mind. The transition should start at home. More specifically, you have to approach the situation positively and discuss with your child about going to kindergarten, visit the place alone or together with your kid to be there for him when exploring the institution for the first time and witness his reaction, make sure that he gets along with other children, let him know that you believe in him and his ability to accommodate quite nicely. You have to explain to him the need of changing the old everyday routine and inform him regarding the new schedule.

Believe it or not, kindergarten is a big deal. For this reason, it is very important to practice the new routine as much as possible so that your little one can get used to it quickly. In what concerns that big day, when you have to drop him off in front of the institution, the smartest way to make the separation more pleasant is to develop a ritual just between you two, give him a personal object that he is fond of or make the entire day special. Otherwise, you might have to bear all the tears and the tantrums. Regardless of the attitude displayed by your kid, you have to remain positive in order to give him the certainty that everything will be fine and that you will come back for him in no time. Remember, is very important to make sure that your child is ready from all points of view for the first day at the kindergarten.
