Technology is something we cannot even imagine living without it for a single day.  There is so much it has given to us to make our lives more comfortable and luxurious. Basically, it is no more a luxury but necessity of our daily routine. We cannot even count the inventions of technology that we use. Same is the case with education. Educational technology has made learning process fast and interesting. But the sad news is that there are thousands of schools in developing countries which are not using these technological aids to make their learning process better. Today we will be discussing those hurdles which such schools are facing to afford the educational technology.

First of all, we must understand the term educational technology. What actually is this?

There are various tools and programs which are helping both teachers and students during class and after it. Teachers use progress monitoring tools, interacting software and report generating tools which help them to do their job nicely. Similarly, students use the laptop and the internet, projectors, smart boards (whiteboard with touch screen and interaction capability).

Now let’s evaluate that what actually is stopping various schools to use such technological aids.

The cost of tech. Tools:

First and foremost issue is that these tools like laptops, interactive whiteboards etc are quite costly and every school cannot afford to provide them to students. They need lots of increase in budget if they want to make it happen. In such cases, various schools make a policy to allow kids to bring their own device but it is often not successful. Because when you purchase something for students at your own, the standard will be the same and teachers will be able to handle those gadgets with efficiency. For example, 30 students bringing their own devices mean at least 20+ kind of different laptops. It makes a huge difference.

Untrained staff:

Exactly like the generation gap, the teachers and the students do not belong to the same era. Technology is modernizing youngsters too rapidly that most of the parents and teachers are unable to understand what a kid is doing on their device. So it needs a lot of training and again it takes a huge budget and expertness to train staff well. They cannot handle new technology unless they have taken sufficient training from professionals.

A hesitating behavior of teachers:

Due to belonging the old school of thought, they feel shy to learn new things. When they are not confidence enough to learn, how possibly they can handle things in front of their students. It is observed from surveying different school that teachers are not willing to adopt new ways of teaching because they are not trained and they don’t want to be trained either.

Lack of Internet availability:

If by any means, teachers are made agreed to use technology and to learn how to use it, it is, unfortunately, the most worrying point that internet facility is not available everywhere. There are areas where the approach of a network is still under construction and still, there are some which don’t even know the name of WiFi or internet so it’s really a big deal.

We will surely be discussing the solutions of these issues in our next post. It is not a problem which should be avoided as we all have admitted that using technology is the vital part of modernizing education.
