Link Retargeting and Why your brand needs this!

by Monika Satyawali digital marketer

You have been through this. Your well thought out ad strategy worked. Through these promotions, you get truckloads of traffic and you can just feel things are going to go well for you. But then in a couple of days, you see the numbers dwindling. The pool gets smaller and smaller and in just a week you are right back where you have started. More than 75% of your customers have left you for good.

Wow, that is kind of depressing. How do you keep your customers with you for the long haul? How do you make sure that all your promotions are not in vain? How do you invest for the long-term benefits? The word you are searching for is Retargeting. All of your users will not convert right away. They are exposed to you, they know about you and your services, but there are loads of reasons why they do not go with the purchase right away. They could be busy or tired. They might have even bookmarked your page, but what about that conversion? You don't get that right away.

Remind them appropriately

Retargeting is one of the best ways to remind your customer of your relevance. One of the best examples for this is Amazon. Have you noticed that Amazon has mastered the perfect way to retarget? All those products that you have on your cart are out there in a bunch of other websites too. You could be reading the news and you'll have a little ad in the corner that shows you what you have left behind. What else, sometimes they one-up themselves and even suggest you products that might interest you. Now, this is one hell of a strategy and guess what, it works!

Customers are a distracted bunch and we usually are so caught up with other stuff that we barely remember details that we need to. Remarketing strategies such as this one will have your customers thinking about you all the time. But make sure that you are not doing is a spammy way. Provide value, and details that your customers will be interested in.

Pixels anyone?

It is time you learned about pixels in the digital marketing/ Retargeting context. This "pixel" we talk about is nothing but a piece of code that is dropped on your website. This piece of javascript code doesn't affect your site's performance or harm your visitors in any way. Don't worry this is not malware. What it, in fact, does is enhance the viewer's browsing too. By the usage of cookies, your website can keep track of your earlier customers. You just know if its the visitor's first time visiting the website or if he/she is a repeat customer.

The reason why people are all in for link retargeting is that of the mental state difference between a customer who has already visited your website and one that is new. You are so much more likely to get a conversion from a repeat customer that one who just saw your website. Let's have an analogy: There are two types of salesmen.

There's that obnoxious guy who barely gets a few words through before shoving his calling card in your face. You don't know who he is, this is the first time you are seeing him and yeah, speaking frankly - you just don't trust him.

Then there's the other sales guy who takes the time to have a decent conversation. He talks about who he is, and his journey to be where he is. He's charismatic and pulls you into his world easily. You just can't wait to get his details once he's done and at the end of the day, you get the calling card - and you do get in contact.

This is exactly how things work for brands too.

Think Different

I'm betting that now after reading about retargeting, your entire worldview of "more traffic = more conversions". It's time to break this myth once it for all. Let's change it to More Trust = More Conversions. What better way to build that trust over your audience that letting them explore your brand through retargeting. The more they see of your brand on other websites and sources, the more you are going to peak their interest. At some point, you are going to have your visitors think, "Who are these people anyway? Let me have a look at what they have to offer!" This is when they make the first move. They get to learn about your brand, the services, and the products you offer. Don't be surprised if they don't make the purchase right now. Just wait, and hey soon the cookies are going to work for you.

They see your product somewhere on another website through retargeted ads. And this is when it strikes them, "Whoa I totally forgot about these guys! Let me go and check out that cool thing they were offering again."

There you have it. You have a 75% percent more chance that this visitor makes a purchase than another one. Statistically, this is mindblowing. This is why you need to start using these methods get huge profits.

Final Words

Link retargeting doesn't just work in this one paradigm. You can find countless uses for it too. Let's think about your pool of visitors subscribed to your newsletter. Through remarketing, you must have an idea of the source of their subscription. If they had done it while reading a blog on "Best lipstick brands.", you know they are interested in lipsticks and cosmetics. Categorize and segment your audience then and there. You can apply different remarketing strategies to appeal to each of those circles and within a few weeks, you have got a constant stream of the audience actually willing to make a purchase.
