When cotton became readily available it became cheaper to produce than Linen Shirt Material Online, and since linen was more expensive it fell out of popularity, except among rich conservative people. But now, it has regained popularity of a sort. This has led to all sorts of synthetic junk being woven to look a bit like the real thing & sold as linen! I recently had the misfortune to buy online a pair of pants that were sold as linen but made completely from polyester knit fabric, so I will never believe a description again.

So if you want tightly-woven cotton- for masks, I am guessing- you will need to inspect & handle the stuff: hold it up to the light and give it a close inspection. Oddly enough, one of the very few areas where any descriptions can be almost believed is that of bedsheets. If it says it has a high thread count, it probably has!

It’s easier to judge a Linen Shirt Fabric for tightness of weave in a well-lit room, looking at a single thickness and judging it on how many tiny pinholes you can see between the threads. Some of the “quilting” cottons on sale is good quality, but some of it is flimsy trash. Also, just to make it harder to judge, most yardage you can buy is “sized”-treated with a product that makes it appear smoother & stiffer.

So take your time & investigate thoroughly. Price is related to quality as a rule, but some stuff is overpriced just the same.
