Life off the Grid

“Living off the grid” is a phrase that has been used and said by many people in Utah and nationwide. But, what exactly does it mean? Does it mean simply not using any technology? Or could it mean something a little more extreme and involve removing yourself from society completely and becoming best friends with a portable generator? 

Living off the grid simply means self-sufficient living. If someone is living in a remote area, they do not rely on any kind of public utilities. This could include things like: water supply, sewage services, natural gas and most importantly, electricity.

Many people in Utah and around the nation often see living off the grid as something that is only reserved for a certain type of person. It’s as if these types of people come from Mars or some foreign country. However, anyone could successfully live off the grid if they were dedicated enough.

An important thing to know about living off the grid is that it will take a lot more effort than living on the grid. As mentioned above, there will be a lack of any type of public utilities. This will require homeowners in remote locations to adapt to a very different lifestyle and use appliances such as a portable generator.

If someone is living in a home that is not on the grid, it will take a lot more work and upkeep. This is because he or she lacks the usual equipment and tools that many people use to live in a modern world. Even though this kind of living is a lot simpler, it does not mean it’s complication-free. 

Some people in Utah and other parts of the United States think that living off the grid means living in a cold, dark and damp living space. However, using a reliable device like a portable generator can actually make it quite comfortable. Homes that are built off the grid can have better insulation, lighting and heating with the right foundation.

Using things like solar panels and sun ovens can also make living off the grid very comfortable and energy efficient. Being able to grow your own food right outside your door and then cook it in a sun oven sounds like paradise for some people. But, still, for others, it’s not exactly dreamlike.

It doesn’t matter where people are; they can be from rural Utah or a bustling city and pretty have a great experience living off the grid. By using energy efficient devices like solar panels or a portable generator, isolation can actually be fantastic and literally, out of this world.
