Lauren Hemp Sees Spain's World Cup Final Loss As A Reminder That Success Is Not A Fluke

by Mohamed A. mohamedali

Lauren Hemp has come a long way since her early days playing 'Hemp Olympics' in her family garden, now standing on the verge of competing in her first World Cup final against Spain.

Hemp gives England a chance down the right, but her cross is easily cleared by Spain, giving them peace of mind for now.

England vs Spain

Sunday night's World Cup final between Spain and England was more than just another football match; it marked an event that celebrated La Roja's ability to overcome all of the turmoil, distractions and disagreements that have beset this tournament over the year-long journey. Spain's victory also served as a reminder that success isn't random -- if you are good enough, success should follow in due course.

Olga Carmona's excellent low strike into the bottom corner by Spain was enough to break the deadlock and seal its win.

England was initially overwhelmed by Spain's sustained attacking pressure across a wide area, frequently finding itself overrun by Barcelona stars. But their defence proved resilient, often holding off Spain until goalkeeper Mary Earps made some important saves to keep England in contention.

Hemp wasted an excellent opportunity for England shortly after halftime, miscuing a volley across goal and leaving Earps no chance to save it. Aitana then displayed impressive skill down the left flank to set up Salma who shot poorly; Earps managed to save it well with some quick thinking from Earps.

As the match reached its closing stages, England started to tire and were unable to capitalize on an excellent opportunity. At that moment, Spain were awarded a penalty following Keira Walsh being penalized for handball, but Hermoso's subsequent penalty shot was saved by Earps diving low left - that proved the last chance in this match and 13 minutes of injury time later, the referee blew his whistle crowning Spain as champions of the Women's World Cup! Their joy on the pitch could be heard throughout and this momentous moment will remain unforgettable in history!

England vs Australia

England are expected to dominate this tournament, and indeed did for much of this final against co-host Australia.

Ella Toone put the Lionesses ahead in the 36th minute after taking advantage of a Rachel Daly throw-in to place a difficult shot diagonally into the far corner. However, any excitement amongst the Stadium Australia crowd was quickly dissipated as England asserted themselves on the ball by frustrating their hosts while terrifying their defence with Hemp and Alessia Russo's movement up front.

Kerr's equalizer in the 63rd gave hope to both those in attendance and millions watching across the nation, but Hemp restored England's lead just three minutes later when she scored with her left-foot after Australian defender Ellie Carpenter over-ran a long ball upfield. Shortly afterwards Hemp provided Russo with the perfect through ball for a close range shot into the top corner four minutes from regulation's conclusion.
