The fort of Mewar is one such property that has found a strong place in the world’s most famous heritage sites. 19th to 25 November is being celebrates as the World Heritage Week. In the wake of World Heritage week we proudly bring forward to you the story of the fort of Mewar which is not just famous in the country but world over for its architectural excellence and exceptional bravery of its rulers. Perching on the hilltop at a height of 180 metres from ground level this historical monument dates back its construction back to seventh century.  It is believed to be the home of Sisodiya and Gehlot dynasties from eighth till sixteenth century. It was 1568 when Mughal ruler Akbar won over the fort and took it under his possession. It is also heard that this fort of Maurya dynasty also came under attack by Allauddin Khilji a couple of times in fifteenth and sixteenth century.

Visiting the Fort with Feet of Stone

The every aspect of this monument is being regarded as a story and elegance and marvel. Having already achieved a level of success at international level it leaves a little to imagination that how grand, important, coveted the place must have been during the country life. Considering the massive premises and the height it is being made at it becomes a tedious task to explore its every corner, therefore, it is prevalent that one should have feet of stone to complete this tiresome task. The most spectacular feature of this fort is the seven gates which cannot be seen anywhere else. Besides this there are a lot of old and ancient temples within the premises. These temples provide a spectacular view for candid photography. There are two strong and formidable stone pillars which are known as Keerti Stambh and Vijay Stambh. Both of these pillars are massive and cut out beautifully to become one of the most famous sites of tourists.

A horde of warriors

This city is also called a city of warriors and the fort at the hilltop is the home of all these warriors. This fort palace has seen the rise and fall of many rulers and since then has been a witness to history and evidence of grandness of the life of rulers.

World’s longest fort

Spread over an area of 700 acres and perching over a hill at the height of 500 metres this fort is believed to be the longest in the world. Getting to the fort is an adventurous journey in itself where one goes through the warped alleys travelling by the steep ways taking towards the top of the hill. The variant doors that come on the way to the fort have been named after the gods and goddesses of Hindu belief and are called Paidal Pol, Bhairav Pol, Hanuman Pol, Ganesh Pol, Joli Pol, Lakshman Pol and Ram Pol.  Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur enjoys the same prestige as the Chittorgarh Fort of Mewar.This used to be an inherent part of the dynasty till the sixteenth century and ever since has been famous strong fortresses, entrance, palaces, temples, moats and masterpieces of Rajput art and craft.

Sacrifice for honour, Dignity and Pride

The Rana Kumbha palace inside the fort is the epitome of beautifully crafted grandeur. The Jheena Rani palace, the huge domes, Gau Mukh Kund, are the places to be seen. It is said that queens and her henchwomen and confidantes performed the johar near the Gau Mukh Kund. The Johar was performed after the Mughal emperors defeated the Mewar army, wherein the whole lot of females of the dynasty jumped in the fire for self-immolation. Their sacrifice and warmth can still be felt at the place.

Kumbhshyam Temple & Vijay Stambh

Kumbhshyam temple is situated in the south of the fort. This is the historical famous temple of Meera Bai. Vijay stambh is situated near this temple. This nine-floor extravagant tower was built in 1437 by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Sultan of Malwa. It is where Allauddin Khilji saw Rani Padmini.

Padmini mahal is an important part of the fort. Situated inside the fort it stands near to a moat. Just next to this is a beautiful small temple called Surya Temple. Padmini palace has many rooms which have been decked up with mirrors. These mirrors rooms make for a beautiful tourist site for people coming from different parts of the wall. It is said that Allauddin Khilji saw Rani Padmini at the same place and was fascinated by her beauty and looks.
