La Liga prepares for June restart but players need to be tested for Covid-19 first

La Liga is girding for a return but one of the conditions is for players to be tested first for coronavirus (Covid-19) before they can resume training.

Clubs from Spain’s top-flight tournament are scheduled to resume individual training from May 5. Tests were scheduled Thursday and again this Saturday.

Parts of the training protocols include sessions being conducted from individual to small groups and then the whole team.

League officials are planning to restart the season in June. The 2019-20 football season was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In line with the preparations, medical authorities urged clubs to put their players in hotels away from their families ``if they want to successfully finish the season.’’

Fernando Rodriguez, director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Madrid, said players like Lionel Messi must be isolated. ``Footballers can become infected, say, playing with their children at home.’’

There are 11 rounds of fixtures left to be played in the league where Barcelona lead the standings before the coronavirus crisis struck.
