Kyphosis is a medical term for excessive curvature of the upper back area, also known as hunchback in layman's language. Usually the thoracic region of the spine/ the upper back region, naturally curves in the neck, upper back and the lower back region. This natural curvature is quite useful for supporting the weight of the body as well as absorbing shocks. But in case of kyphosis this curvature is more than the normal one.

Kyphosis treatment

Usually caused due to aging, muscle weakness of the upper back region, bone degenaration, slipped disc etc. kyphosis treatment should be done when it results in breathing difficulties, pain and fatigue. The treatment of kyphosis depends on the severity and the underlying cause for such a condition. Though in several cases, doctors prescribe over-the-counter pain relievers, following a healthy lifestyle with regular yoga practice has shown positive results in most patients.

In case the condition has developed due to osteoporosis, then it is essential that the bone deterioration be treated and its spread be arrested so that kyphosis does get worse. While in case of kids, many times the condition develops into scheuermann's disease. Braces, physical therapy or corrective surgeries are usually recommended in such cases. Here braces stop the kyphosis from spreading, and at the same time do not hinder the bone growth of the child. Exercises which strengthen the abdominal muscles along with a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is highly beneficial for those suffering from this physical condition.

There are cases wherein the kyphosis curve is so severe that it pinches nerve roots or the spinal cord. In such cases, spinal fusion surgery is usually recommended by the doctors. In this surgery bone pieces are inserted between teh vertebrae and then fastened together with a metal rod and screw. This is done so until the spine heals together in a corrected position.
