Breast Cancer - Early Screening
One of the most common type of cancer, breast cancer is a tumor which starts in the cells of the breast. There are several cases wherein this tumor spreads to the nearby body parts as well. Though quite prevalent among females, there are good number of cases wherein even males have been effected by this cancer. Screening tests help in early detection of the cancer, way before it develops at a mature stage and starts effecting the other body parts.
The screening tests which help in breast cancer detection are:
Clinical Breast Examination
Mammography
Breast MRI
Clinical Breast Examination (CBE)
This is a physical examination of the breasts by a healthcare provider/ doctor. In this case the breasts and underarms are checked for any kind of abnormalities like lump etc. Though there are times when nothing substantial is gained after the CBE, in case some changes/ abnormalities is diagnosed, then you need to follow-up with other screening tests as well in order to understand the real cause of such a condition.
Mammography
This breast cancer screening tool used when physical examination fails to diagnose the cancer. An effective tool, mammography helps in screening cancer at an early stage. It uses X-rays to create iamges of the breast. In case there are signs of breast cancer development, then a follow-up for breast cancer treatment needs to be done.
Breast MRI
Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) involves the use of magnetic fields in order to create an image of the breast. As compared to mammography, this method is more invasive as a contrast agent is given through an IV before the procedure. There is evidence that women who are diagnosed with cancer in one breast, can find cancer possibilities in the opposite (contralateral) breast in a better manner with a mammography backed with a MRI as compared to mammography alone. It also helps in staging the cancer.
Breast cancer screening is highly recommended for all women, more so in case where there is a family history of breast cancer. In such cases it is adviced that even the male members undertake the screening tests just to be sure about their health.
Who should go for screening?
All women who are 40 years and above should get an annual mammography done.
Those with a family history of cancer and breast cancer in particular.
If there is a sudden discharge from the nipples.

Breast cancer can be prevented from spreading if it is diagnosed at an early stage. It is adviced that you visit certified breast cancer treatment centres in order to get the examination done.
