Know When do you Need Reading Glasses?

by Kimmie Watson Marketing Head

Pulling the book near to your eyes, taking it far away, trying to adjust constantly but eventually, nothing works and all the words appear blurred. What could be the problem? Are you suffering from poor vision? But you are able to focus on everything at a distance and even on nearby things then why reading is so difficult?

If the words don’t appear clear after several adjustments too then the reason might be presbyopia. Wondering what’s that? It is a vision condition when you are unable to focus on objects up close and it can be corrected with the help of reading glasses.

Let’s understand when would you need reading glasses:

Above 40 years of age:

Presbyopia is a default vision condition that is developed in people above 40 years of age. It’s a normal part of the ageing process. As you grow old, your eye lens becomes rigid and the ability to focus on up-close objects slowly reduces. That is when you find difficulty in reading or performing any close up tasks like stitching etc. Things will appear blurred.

Whether you already wear prescription glasses or not, reading glasses will be a must above 40 years of age. Presbyopia eventually affects everybody, hence this vision condition cannot be stopped but only corrected using reading glasses.

Too much strain on eyes:

Do you read for prolonged hours or spend more screentime? If you work on computers, your eyes tend to feel stressful and heavy. You find it hard to perform detailed work due to the strain caused prior. To get relief instantly, you try blinking your eyes often but this would be just a temporary solution. If you witness this situation often, might be you are developing presbyopia. So it is better to get a pair of reading glasses.

Find no brightness:

No matter how many lights are on around you, how bright the surrounding, if you still find the light is dull and are unable to read clearly then you might require reading glasses. Normally this happens above 60 as a person requires more light to perform tasks at this age as compared to a person at the age of 20.

Frequent headaches:

After reading a novel late night, do you witness a headache? Or after performing any stitching work for hours, do you feel heavy headed? It is always wise to take frequent breaks. Follow 20-20-20 rule which suggests taking a 20 seconds break in every 20 minutes and look somewhere at a distance of 20 feet. Again this is a temporary solution.

If you witness prolonged headache behind your eyes then you might be suffering from hyperopia. It is wise to consult a doctor and if needed get reading glasses.

Remember reading glasses and computer glasses are not the same

If you witness blurred vision due to prolonged usage of any digital device then you need computer glasses not reading glasses. Computer glasses are specially designed to block the harmful blue light emitted from the digital devices that cause digital eye strain and blurred vision. However, you can go for reading glasses with blue block coating which can protect your eyes from digital devices and also offer clear vision while reading.
