Know In Detail How Exactly The Chip Tuning Works?

When it comes to tuning a car we usually come across some words like re-chipping, remapping or chip tuning. All these terms merely belong to engine tuning that is done electronically rather mechanically. The chip here refers to an electronic storage device which is present on the circuit board inside the engine control unit. The chip in ECU consists of values in the binary form which can only be understood by ECU’s main processor and it further uses these values to control the engine.

Each and value has its own and separate position and when the car is re-chipped, the values are altered at the group of addresses that controls fuelling, ignition timing and on turbo engines, turbo boost. These are known as maps and often used term for this process is remapping.

The idea of chip tuning initially sound a bit good but is it possible to add horsepower without ever adding physical modifications? Yes, it is. These are the steps that make all this possible:

  • Ignition timing: The efficiency of the engine is obviously a priority for manufacturers and so is reliability. Try advancing the timing as the increases the probability of generating knocks. It is necessary to properly address the knock because it can easily ruin an engine. The manufacturers or the automobile makers will consistently try keeping the ignition timing within the safe range. But, by tuning the timing you can unlock a lot of untapped potentials.

  • Air/fuel ratio: The gasoline entirely composed of octane has air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. This ratio is by mass and it means for every gram of fuel your engine burns it will require 14.7 grams of air. It is thus believed that maximum power is generated at an air-fuel ratio of 12.5:1, while maximum thermal efficiency is achieved at the air-fuel ratio of 16:1. The manufacturers want to generate more horsepower so that the engine becomes fun responsive for the driver and they’ll also need to make sure that the vehicle’s engine is efficient and it meets government emission regulations.

  • Governors: The control of many of the things is directly in the hands of the manufacturers and they attempt to electronically limit your run. The revolutions per minute i.e. RPM cut-offs will occur in safe boundaries and the highest speed is governed digitally quite often. In order to raise the engine’s spark or fuel cut-off or top speed, look for the simple aftermarket plug and play solutions.

  • Launch control: Tuning always does not mean to add power. There are far many other features that can also be considered like launch control and flat foot shifting which can further be added to the plug and play devices. And the aftermarket launch control systems will hold the engine’s revolutions per minute at a selected speed while the vehicle is stationary. Once the clutch is dumped, the revolutions per minute are not at all limited by the launch control.

  • More boost: A tuned engines give a power boost to the vehicle’s overall performance. A boost to your vehicle definitely makes you smile and adding a boost is one of the simplest ways of adding power to the forced induction engine. With the increase in boost, you can increase the amount of air packed into the cylinder. Whatever it is remapping, rolling road tuning or adding a boost to the vehicle, all of them result in increasing and improving the overall performance of your vehicle’s engine.

  • Things to consider: There are numerous things for a vehicle’s maintenance and tuning that are to be considered and there are many companies that provide off the shelf tuning maps to a number of varieties of cars. These maps are often beneficial in providing core performance benefits, remembering that the longevity of your engine has been reduced. Get your car tuned professionally by the reputable company so as to expect its better working and performance and also ensure that the boundaries and the limits are safe. A lot of automobile manufacturers claim that every engine they put out is similar to each other, but in reality, that’s of course not the case and therefore, it is beneficial to tune to your specific engine separately.
