Know About the Most Common Pathology Tests

by Shaina Verma Medical Practitioner

Pathology tests cover different tests including specific tests on blood, urine, stools, and bodily tissues. When a person gets sick, most of the decisions about their treatment and care depend on the outcome of their pathology tests. Getting the health tests done from a reputed pathology lab can help people to have better chances of accurate and on-time reports.

Here are some of the most common pathology tests, carried out to detect various health conditions and diseases in an individual:

Liver Function Tests

LFT tests are done to measure specific substances, proteins, and enzymes produced by the liver. In case the liver is damaged or has any other complications, the quantity of these substances can be affected. LFT tests allow the doctor to get an overview of the liver health. If the doctor finds a certain issue in the liver, he or she can prescribe some further tests to know the exact cause of the liver problem.

Complete Blood Count

The Complete Blood Count or CBC test helps doctors to find out the exact number of blood cells and their growth in the blood. If the quantity of any cells is higher or lower, it indicates issues such as nutritional factors, exposure to toxic substances, and medications. Abnormalities in CBC tests can be caused by infections, anaemia, any inherited conditions, or some blood cancers like leukemia.

Thyroid Stimulating Homone

This test is done to check, diagnose, and observe treatment for thyroid function disorders such as hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (not sufficient thyroid hormone). These conditions can happen as a result of infections, tumours, pregnancy, and sometimes overuse of certain medicines. The test assesses the quantity of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood. Thyroid hormones balance several vital body functions such as body weight, energy levels, heart rate, breathing, and temperature; thus, it is vital that these hormones are produced in regulated levels.

Iron tests

Iron deficiency is a sign of extreme loss of iron through bleeding or lack of nutritional diet. So, it is vital to find out the exact cause of iron deficiency as it may be the primary reason for several diseases. However, too much iron in the blood can also cause serious health conditions like heart failure, liver disease, diabetes, and arthritis. However, the effects of too much or too low iron can be easily managed, if detected on time.

Urinalysis

It is a test carried out on a urine sample to check kidney disorders and some metabolic disorders like diabetes. The doctor may prescribe their patients to get urinalysis done in several conditions. Some of the common tests as part of urinalysis are screening for urine protein, infection in the urinary tract, or kidney disease.

So, these are the most common pathology tests, prescribed by doctors to check certain health issues in patients. Nowadays, there are several smartphone apps that make it easier for people to book a test from the comfort of their home. The health test app also helps people to locate the nearest lab, check test details, and receive test reports online.
