Last week I found really cool tutorials online and I desperately wanted to try them! So, during the weekend, I decided to give myself a break and to get creative! As result, I surprised grandma with a new bench for her garden and a really lovely hand-made rug! To see how I transformed old junk into new garden features, please continue to read !

Headboard Bench:

A couple of years ago, my grandparents picked up a new bed. The destiny of the previous one was to turn into junk in the garage. As you know, there is a hidden power in old junk. So, the previous day, I ended up digging old treasures in the garage. Some of the items deserved a second chance, some of them did not! Oh well! Among all the junk, I plan to turn into a new chef-d’oeuvre is a wooden headboard. And I'm really lucky to have my grandpa, who is a hobbyist woodwork. He helps me every time, if I need some extra help. The two of us, then decided to surprise grandma with a new bench. The inspiration came across after I read some tutorials, therefore, I'd like to give special credits to all DIY experts out there!

Headboard Bench

Firstly, I helped grandpa build a base box for the sitting area. He used 1x4s wooden pieces with an extra one in the centre, for additional support. Then, he put two boards across the top of the box to finish the seat area. Make sure there is a small gap left between the two boards, so that there is enough space for water to run through. Once the seat board was done, we attached four legs to the underside of the seat area. Grandpa said it was crucial to waterproof the bench. According to him, the process will protect the bench from rotting, as well as from minor cracks. When protected, our new bench will survive for longer time!
And finally, we attach the headboard with some serious bolts. I mean really serious ones! The picture bellow shows a good example of such great bench when finished. I like this idea a lot for many reasons. Firstly, it has a vintage-like appearance and secondly it's a great recycled project.

Hooray, Hooray For A New Hula-Hoop Rug:

To keep you busier next weekend, here is another DIY project! A Hula- Hoop rug! It might sound like a crazy idea, but believe me, you'll be very surprised of how cool this rug is! However, for the DIY fans (like myself) this particular project is mega fun! To make yourself one of these rad “scrap innovation”, you need some old t-shirts and, of course, a hula hoop. I'd suggest to use whatever fabric materials you've got in your house. The bigger the hula hoop is, the bigger the rug is. In comparison to the previous project, the hula hoop rug is way easier.

The materials needed are:

  • Scissors;
  • Some old t-shirts you no longer wear;
  • A hula hoop (in most tutorials, a 33 inches hula hoop is used).

How To Make It :

  1. Prepare around 11 loops.Be very careful scissors are sharp ! Don't cut your fingers, hair or nose !
  2. Now it's time to take you hula hoop. Stretch one of the strips and put it around the hula hoop. Do the same step but this time make a cross. Continue with this step all the way around the hula hoop until you use all the strips. When ready, your hula hoop looks like image number four.
  3. Now wave the other stripes with different colours, so that there is a rainbow effect. Remember to push the waft stripe towards the centre to keep it a bit snug. Once you reach the end of the stripe you take the next one and thread it to the previous one.

Hula Hoop Rug
Of course, I've already made myself of those magic Hula-Hoop rugs! Now grandma has a nice cosy rug, which keeps her feet warm when she sits on the bench! Moreover, the landscape of the garden looks more colourful and fresh ! The final result
