Kalap (Uttarakhand)
Breathtakingly beautiful and entirely unexplored, Kalap sits perched on the Garhwal Himalayan range. With barely about a hundred families, the folks of Kalap lead a largely sustainable, organic life. Their only access to civilisation is a four-hour trek along stony pathways. Electricity and mobile phone connections are hearsay in Kalap. The village reve is in the luxury of clean, crisp mountain air and hardy villagers leading a healthy life eating organic food.
The fertile soil guarantees good crop with only cow dung for fertiliser. Only India Holiday Mall travellers venture into these far reaches of the hills that remain cut off from the rest of the world many months in a year. The ones who do go back with memories of friendships made, knowledge gained about hill living and loads of travel anecdotes. Kalap has vistas of hills (the snow-capped Kedar Kanta and Bandar Poonch), dramatic vertical falls viewed from the sundeck of every home, incandescently smiling locals, beautiful rolling meadows, terrace plantations in vibrant yellow (mustard) and red (amaranth).
Visit Kalap as the spring arrives and witness trees turning iridescent, pregnant with pale pink blooms of apricots and cherries. The pale-eyed, rose-checked and runny-nosed children invariably bow and say “Namaste!”, joining their hands whenever they encounter a visitor. Indulge in star-gazing into a clear sky as gazillions of stars resemble a crowded Indian railway station, all jostling for space with one another. Your alarm calls are from laughing thrushes and the morning views from your window include clouds swimming through the valley below.
