Joel Piroe Double Pushes Wigan Closer to Drop Zone

by Mohamed A. mohamedali

Swansea came back from 2-0 down to deny Wigan a vital win, with Joel Piroe's double providing the difference in an epic match that saw Leam Richardson's side edge closer to relegation.

Joel Piroe has had an impressive debut season for Dutchman. He scored the most goals in the second tier for a Dutchman and it's been an encouraging start to his career at Swansea.

Swansea 2-0 Wigan

Swansea rallied from 2-0 down to earn a draw against Wigan Athletic and deny them an opportunity for victory. However, Swansea remain in relegation zone and must hope another team slips up.

Joel Piroe's second-half penalty earned Russell Martin's side a crucial point. But it was the Latics who took the lead after Will Keane and Tom Naylor headed in James McClean's corners.

Ryan Manning's goal just before half-time restored Swansea to level and they eventually salvaged a draw through Piroe's late penalty. But the visitors remain at the bottom of the Championship table and could face some tough matches after this one.

First Half

Swansea secured all three points through Dutch striker Joel Piroe's first-half double, helping them to claim maximum points against Wigan who remain eight points away from Championship survival. Wigan are bottom of the table with five matches remaining and need an incredible turnaround in form if they want to secure survival this season.

Piroe was instrumental in the opening goal, providing a beautiful passing move that saw Jay Fulton pass the ball to him on the edge of Wigan's box. He turned and curled his shot into the corner for an impressive start.

Second Half

Wigan were left with no chance as Joel Piroe doubled their advantage to further compound the misery for the Lancashire side and push them closer towards relegation. It had been an intense first half that ended 2-0 for Swansea, who played with confidence and intensity throughout.

After a penalty appeal was disallowed, Swansea took control of the game as Paterson's pass fell perfectly for Piroe to slot past Seny Dieng for his 40th goal for the club and an indication of how confident they have become in their play. It was an example of why Swansea are such successful this season - their confidence shines through in every match they play.

Wigan kept throwing bodies up the field in an effort to gain ground on their opponents, but ultimately failed to capitalize on their chances. Latics were also unfortunate to suffer an injury to substitute Liam Cullen who left the field clutching his left shoulder in apparent discomfort.

Goals

Aside from goal line defense, there are other key areas to focus on in a defensive game plan. For instance, the area surrounding the center line of scrimmage is essential for containment; this area is known as "the box." Its width, height and vertical stretch to the goal line define its boundaries. Keeping the ball within this 'box' will not be an easy feat with Piroe pushing Wigan closer towards their drop zone with each pass.

Establishing goals, in addition to setting standards, is an integral step in the growth of any business. The most successful objectives are specific, relevant and attainable; using the appropriate tool to help you focus on these targets and reach them on time will guarantee your company's success.

Substitutions

Joel Piroe added to Wigan's woes by scoring twice in the opening half against Swansea to edge them closer to the drop zone. The Welshman scored on a swift counterattack for Shaun Maloney's men to seal an important win at DW Stadium and end their six match winless streak in league play.

Latics remain six points below safety with their poor goal difference, despite beating Rangers. Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored twice in the second half to give Burnley a comfortable 2-0 win at home against 10-man Sheffield United; Norwich City took a hit as they were held to a draw by Rotherham.

The International Fencing Federation has approved an optional temporary amendment to COVID-19 that allows competitions involving senior 'A' international teams to utilize up to five substitutes during a match, as determined appropriate by the referee.
