Indian Wedding Photography : Industry Insight

by Wedding Photo Professional Wedding Photographer

Wedding photography in India has been stupendously increasing in arrangement with the matrimony and allied business as a whole whose size is estimated at $25-30 billion and which is growing at 20-25 percent annually. There are said to be 10,000-15,000 candid wedding photographers in India who focus on the mid-to-high end of the wedding segment and charge anything between Rs 50,000 and Rs 7 lakh a day.

The best wedding photographers in Mumbai charge an enormous amount of Rs 8-10 lakh a day, with a team of 10-14 photographers, cinematographers or videographers, editors and assistants, at a wedding.

Wedding Photography before 2008:

But the market was not as emerging as today even before 2008. The wedding shot on those days was much different from today’s candid wedding photography in India. On those days wedding shoots highly empathized and representational. But the kind of storytelling and imagery were popularly established in West by that time.

Wedding Photography Now:

While communities like Marwaris, Sindhis, Punjabis, and Gujaratis have by tradition been allied with big fat Indian weddings, that surely seems to be altering, although little by little.

This could partly be attributed to events like the Mehendi and cocktails becoming standard, and partly to the rise of cross-cultural love marriages. What has proved to be a enhance to the wedding industry and, by extension, to wedding photographers in Kolkata and all over India, is that while the November-February month is still the most up-to-date season for weddings, other months are not as devoid as they used to be, as destination weddings become cheaper, with venues in places like Rajasthan and Goa, and even Thailand, available at inexpensive prices in the summer.

Besides the non-seasonality, the most conspicuous changes in weddings have been their imagery. While equipment like Steady cams and aerial cams are used more commonly and highlights for wedding films are made, what has caught on in a big way is what photographers call ‘couple shoots’. These are pictures of just the couple before or after the wedding (Pre/Post Wedding Photography). Professional Photographers in Mumbai and India are finding new creative avenues in Wedding Photography. What has changed now is people are looking for idiosyncratic and fashionable work, which needs more engagement with the family which a studio may not be able to do.

The Gap:

Almost every wedding photographer advertises themselves as candid wedding photographer in India, though only a portion of the photographs displayed on their website seems unscripted. But couples seem not to care as they are not exactly looking for a manuscript of the meticulousness of their wedding. They just want the pictures to look dazzling.

Future Opportunities and Appreciations:

Opportunities are only going to get bigger with even the not-so-affluent in cities big and small experimenting with their weddings and bombardment out big bucks. India does have an award for wedding photographersgiven by a photography magazine and online photography company Canvera. And it certainly does not impair that wedding photography is easily among the most worthwhile genres for best wedding photographers in India.
