NBN for Business

First of all, in what regards the majority of people who own a small business, they will most of the times delve into doing things like getting their day to day work done, having problems with tax deadlines, dealing with those who don't pay on time, and so forth, but the difference is that they will get to do this only if they have plenty of time for it.

It also takes experience, because not everyone is familiar with social media, Google Adwords and the most up to date cloud accounting services. Given these statistics, it's only natural that 4 out of 10 Australians who own a small business to not expect anything from the NBN, based on information released in a report earlier this month, conducted by Roy Morgan (link).

Other factors involved

However, the question that lingers is if that is actually the only reason that makes these people not expect anything from the NBN. Even though there is a lot of time pressure, it's simple to stumble upon a lot of free internet information about NBN and there are plenty of web pages that contain a lot of it presented in bullet points as well. In what regards the Roy Morgan press release, it stated that those owning a small business have a general negative opinion with 4 in 10 people not seeing any benefits for their business, 3 in 10 seeing the benefits, while the rest being unsure on the benefits.

This leads to just suspecting different other sets of reasons that surrounding this situation:

  • One of the interesting statistics regards the number of people who have actually didn't take the time in order check out the NBN and just directly dismissed it as an internet business thing. For those who don't sell products or services on the internet, they might not agree that the NBN and the internet actually have the exact same relevance for them.

  • There are plenty of news surrounding the NBN and when it will actually get to be constructed, but until people will get to connect to it, it will be a very long time. For instance, it's expected that in mid 2015 Tasmania to be the first Australian state that will be completely connected to this new platform. However, this is all theory for many people and until more news about real life stories come up, it would still take some time to convince individuals.

  • It seems that the states which reported the most amount of skepticism around the NBN are the ones that also had brought very harsh criticism on the idea of the government trying to improve performance while ensuring there is also a great environment that would allow businesses to grow.

Learning more about the benefits

There are many benefits that small business owners will have with the NBN and some of them will be presented below.

  • First of all, people should know that the NBN is not only about having a great download speed, but also about the connection coping. There were some users that said their day to day browsing experience didn't really improve, but that they were not able to make clearer and crisper VoIP calls, while concomitantly uploading very large files.

  • However, it's important for people to realize that download speeds are just an aspect of the NBN. Basically, it can do more than one thing and one of them is also the upload speed which will be increased a lot. People who are using DropBox for instance will immediately see the benefits and in theory, it seems that video conferencing is the one that will get to benefit from NBN a lot.

  • Another benefit would be the possibility of having several reliable voice over IP phone lines running to the business by using the internet. Even thought this was something that could be done before, it would not be possible with the exact level of reliability. For this purpose, last year NBN announced business services that had a special high priority traffic levels for this purpose.

  • It's true that not everyone can actually get a good broadband connection nowadays and it seems that one of the states wants to make sure that the NBN will be possible at the soonest, so that more states in Australia can take advantage of it.

  • It seems that a lot of individuals agree on the fact that the NBN plans are usually faster and they cost very little money, compared to DSL based business grade internet services (broadband specifically). There are many kinds of factors that will influence NBN prices and they are the type of plan, the provider and so forth. However, compared to what business owners now have to pay for business services over DSL, like SHDSL and Bonded DSL, the prices are definitely lower.

Videoconferencing and VOIP are 2 of the services that can be taken advantage of without someone being an internet business. However, whether these are a priority or not for small business owners as interviewed by Roy Morgan still remains a good question. Regardless of what is thought about NBN, the best advice would be that it would not actually be a bad idea to not take singular aspects into consideration, but actually try and grasp the bigger picture of what NBN is and what it could change into the Australian business environment.

In the end, even if it will be a NBN or not, what matters in the end is how the online world will affect someone's business. People should think about competitors invading their turf by selling on the internet and their customers that search products and services using Google.

These are very important things which can be influenced, without actually having to wait for the NBN. However, when the NBN will arrive it's only natural that people will switch to it and start reaping a lot of success because of it.
