Important Lathe Machine Accessories

by Marshall Machine We are Marshall We make CNC Machines

Lathe machines are machines that shape a piece of metal by removing the extra part from the workpiece to give the desired shape and size to the workpiece. In the entire process, the lathe machine works on the metal piece with the help of various operations like grooving, chamfering, forming, knurling, and many others.

It is a very versatile machine that is widely used in many industries including manufacturing, metal shaping, and many more. The machine has various components that function simultaneously to shape the metal and other hard materials. A chuck is used to secure the workpiece in a place or in the central position of the machine. The workpiece than rotates against the cutting tool. This process removes all the excess metal and shapes the material to obtain the desired result.

Accessories of a lathe machine

A lathe machine comprises of different kinds of accessories. Listed below are some of them:

  • Centres

There are two kinds of centres in a lathe machine. They are live centres and dead centres. The live centre holds the headstock spindle. It revolves the workpiece.

A dead centre is utilized in the tailstock spindle. It cannot revolve.

  • Chucks

Chucks are considered as one of the most integral parts of lathe machines. They hold the workpiece and rotate in order to shape it. Chucks are of many kinds. The two most commonly used chucks are three-jaw universal chuck and four-jaw independent chuck.

The three-jaw universal chuck is a self-centring chuck. It is also known as scroll chuck. It is used to hold hexagonal, as well as round workpieces.

On the other hand, the four-jaw independent chuck has four distinct jaws that are reversible. The jaws can be adjusted to hold the workpiece at the proper place. These chucks are used to hold square, round, as well as irregularly shaped workpieces.

  • Carriers

To shape a workpiece, it is kept on the mandrel or locked in between the two centres. It is rotated by clamping the carrier or the dog to the end. A pin is used to engage the workpiece to the face plate or drive plate. The shape of the carrier can either be straight or bent.

  • Face plate

Face plate is much similar to the drive plate except that the drive plate is larger than the face plate in terms of diameter. It has more number of open slots to use more bolts in order to secure the workpiece on the face of the plate.

  • Drive plate

Drive plate is a circular plate which is fastened to the spindle nose. It is fixed using a hold for a pin used when the workpiece is clasped in a lathe carrier with a straight tail. The pin is removed when a bent tail dog is utilized. The bent part is inserted in the hole.
