Important facts about liver transplant in India

by DR A. S. SOIN Liver Transplant India

Liver Transplant is a surgical procedure which removes a diseased liver and replaces it with a healthy liver from a donor. The liver is a vital organ of our body and performs several key functions, including filtering out and disposing on toxins from our body.

The liver fuels the body with the energy it needs to function and helps in fighting a number of viruses and infections. It produces blood-clotting factors, cholesterol levels, and regulates sex hormones. In the case of liver failure, all these functions are affected. Our body cannot sustain without a healthy liver.

If the liver gets damaged, the only successful treatment which offers a chance of survival is a liver transplant. It involves the replacement of a patient’s diseased liver by a new liver that can either be donated from a living donor (Living Donor Liver Transplant or LDLT) or can be taken from a Cadaver (Cadaveric or Deceased- Donor Liver Transplant or DDLT).

Liver Transplant Surgery Specialist in India take a complete liver from a cadaver, however, in the case of a living donor, a part of the liver is taken. The liver has a special capacity of regeneration and even if approx. 70% of the liver is removed from a body, the remaining can regenerate. It grows rapidly and restores the full functional capacity which is required for the normal functioning of the body.

Due to this unique property, a healthy liver can be safely taken from a live voluntary donor and used to replace the diseased or damaged liver in a patient without causing any harm to either the donor or the patient. The remaining part of the liver for both the donor and the recipient grows back and becomes fully functional in just three to four weeks.

According to the Human Organ Act 1996, a Liver transplants in india  is restricted to family members (brother, sister, father, mother, son, daughter) or close relatives. Any person above the age of 18 can donate the liver to their close relatives or family members. Medically, the liver donor should have a compatible blood group and should be less than 55 years of age. The donor needs to be physically and medically fit and has to go a thorough evaluation by a Liver Transplant Surgeon in India.

In India, awareness about organ donation is still in its infancy stage. Liver transplant is a major surgery, approx. 90% of transplant recipients survive one-year post surgery. The long-term success rate of a liver transplant is nearly 55-60%. Most of the patients lead a normal, healthy and productive life post a liver transplant. Ref:  https://bit.ly/2VUrTdW
