Importance of UPS in Hospitals

The face of healthcare is changing fast with technology. It plays an important role in diagnosis, treatment of patients and monitoring their condition. So technology is not only saving the lives of patients but also speed up their recovery. As part of this general development, technologies like ultrasound, MRI and X-Ray, have moved radiology into a more central role in patient care. This technology ensures that medical resources are used proficiently, by more quickly identifying the need for additional tests, specialist referrals and even hospitalization.

Due to all these technologies, health care facilities are more dependent on electronic system as these technologies improve the service quality and operations. So the need for power has grown too much in health sector. As part of this plan, UPSs (Uninterruptable Power Supply) should be considered. As UPS serves two main purposes, one is to provide backup power urgently whenever there is power loss and other to provide some type of protection from power quality issues that may causes damage to equipment. Some major benefits are below:

Level of protection for the patient: It is very important for disaster recovery to get right UPS system organized into a facility design. In hospitals, some units are very critical such as operating theaters and intensive care units which require extra supply is needed which is done by UPSs with a high degree of fault tolerance. Other areas in the hospital, such as storage rooms, cafeterias do not have any criticality level and can be directly connected to the electrical network.

Reliability and safety: Uninterrupted power is an important factor of patient care. You can rely on UPS systems for continuous, power, safety and reliability. UPS systems provides safety measures if there is any power break up, damage in the equipment, system errors or any other power mis-functions that could compromise with patient safety or comfort, as it is very important for patient safety, that all the machines run properly without any disruption.

UPS for Supporting Lab Equipment: There are cases where medical and research lab equipment need supported by UPS systems. Some Lab machinery such as analyzers run timed processes are essential to run for hours and if they get interrupted in between due to power cut or low power supply, it can result in loss of matter contained inside or the time to reprocess. This can have an impact on lab results which could be crucial to a patient’s life or have a major impact on the practice operating schedule.

Life Support Equipment and Uninterruptible Power Supplies:– As life support system in hospitals are essential for patient care and it is very important that it should run properly without any power failure. Some life support system has own backup system but they provide a short duration of backup protection so it is always safe to have an extra level of protection. If there won’t be any protection, it can result in machine failures including life support, anesthesia technology, MRI scans and many more machines which could stop working completely.

Important for Surgery Equipment: Uninterrupted power supply keeps medical devices to run smoothly. Frequent power failures can damage the medical equipment. So it is necessary to have a continuous power supply in hospital to keep these critical machines working perfectly.

Generator powered machine: Electrical machines such as Air conditioners, heaters and ventilators will stop working if there is no proper power backup and this will loss may cause discomfort among the patients and staff. It can also causes to fail due to overheating and make cooled medicines and even donated organs unusable. Due to no power supply, it will cause overheating and the cooling machined and donated organs will become unusable.

Data Loss Security: In hospitals, there are many records and information about the patients, their medical history, reports which is important in checking the patient health. By server overheating or power loss there will also be loss of data and this will result in loss of patient records, any other important information and this will cause long lasting problems.

Security issues: There will be security issues as alarms will not work and automatic lock door will not work.

Areas in Hospital where UPS is of utmost Importance: There are other areas where uninterruptible power supply in hospitals is needed, such as clinical lab equipment that stores all the medical research, other is Medical Gas Monitoring Systems, medical and Vaccine Refrigerators and Freezers, Life Supporting Equipment and Monitors, Surgical Equipment and Operating Rooms, Home Healthcare Equipment such as CPAP units and O2 Concentrators. So UPS systems in hospital are very important and are ideal for Medical devices, Diagnostic imaging scanners, Health care IT equipment, Clinical lab equipment, Nurse call station, Non life-support patient vicinity systems, Networking devices, Office equipment.
