WHAT IS CHORDEE?

Chordee is a bend of the penis that happens when the penis curves sharply up or down. It usually happens at the very end of the penis at the glans or tip.

Chordee is relatively common, happening in about1 of every 300 of male children, caused by decreased elasticity in one or more of the fascial layers, leading to shortness of one of the corpus cavernosum when an erection occurs.

It can be congenital or may be acquired later due to injury to the organ.

Congenital Chordee is an associated complication or a symptom of hypospadias.

Chordeemay be acquired due to trauma, or as a complication of Peyronie's disease.

 

WHAT CAUSES CHORDEE?

·        Chordee can happen when the penis suddenly stops growing while a fetus is developing during pregnancy for one of several reasons. 

·         Genetics may be part of the reason. 

·         Circumcision sometimes can also, cause chordee.

 

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CHORDEE?

Penile curvature: The classic and easily noticeable symptom of chordee is a sharp curve of the penis, either upward or downward.

Mainly chordee is associated with an abnormal urinary condition in boys called Hypospadias.

Other possible symptoms of chordee include:

Penile torsion: The foreskin appears like a hood means it is supposed to cover the whole penis usually but in chordee like condition, it covers the top half of the penis.

Skin tethering: The tissue is extremely thin around the urethra near the tip of the penis.

Webbed penis: The skin on the bottom of the penis shaft is joined to the skin of the scrotum creating a web like area.

 

CHORDEE WITH HYPOSPADIAS

Chordee is a complication or symptom of hypospadias. Hypospadias is an abnormal urinary condition in boys, which is indicated with the abnormal urethral opening. It is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip.

 

HOW IS CHORDEE DIAGNOSED?

In the case of congenital Chordeethe neonatologist diagnose the chordee by looking for symptoms on the penis at the time of the birth of a boy. Also if acquired, chordee can be easily noticed.

 

HOW IS CHORDEE TREATED?

Chordee if significantly creating problems to the patient, it is corrected through surgical intervention. The reconstructive urologist will discuss the benefits and risks before the surgery.

Surgery is done to straighten the penis making sure that the length remains same on all sides of the penis.

And in the case of hypospadias, it is ensured that urethral opening remains at the tip of the penis.

 

WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR BOYS BORN WITH CHORDEE?

Most repairs of chordee last a lifetime and lead to normal, healthy function of the penis provided an expert reconstructive a urologist has done chordee correction surgery.

Complications after the surgery are not common, but they do occur as other procedures have.
