PREVENTION OF STRICTURE URETHRA

There are certain measures if a person follows may have the chance of preventing urethral stricture to happen but is not possible always. Following are a few preventive measures for stricture urethra:

  • If a person does self-catheterization means he inserts the urinary bag or catheter himself to excrete urine, use lubricating jelly and the smallest possible urinary bag for the shortest time period.

  • Always use protection during sexual activity so to prevent the transmission of chlamydia or gonorrhoea and avoid STD.

  • Avoid sexual activities with partners having an infection.

  • Get yourself evaluated regularly for STDs, including gonorrhoea and chlamydia, and take the appropriate treatment without any delays.

  • Wear protective equipment like a helmet while riding two-wheelers to avoid pelvic fractures.

Urethral strictures can be a troublesome ranging from mild urinary retention up to kidney damage. A person diagnosed with stricture urethra if not treated can become totally unable to urinate causing urine to back up in the urinary tract and eventually leading to kidney damage.

Treatments range from watchful waiting to surgical approaches like urethrotomy and Urethroplasty. Since strictures are likely to reoccur, we suggest you to continue a follow up with the urologist even after treatment. If for the first time you are considering the urethroplasty for your case, we suggest you consult a reconstructive urologist.
