Other uses include its use in the manufacture of capsules, adhesive in plastic bandages, moisturizing agent in ophthalmic drops and artificial tears, it is also used in the production of cosmetics and food products.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose causes a decrease in the postprandial glycemic response, because it generates viscous solutions in the gastrointestinal tract. The reason why the dietary fibbers produce this effect seems to be the delay of the gastric emptying, the reduction of the access of the digestive enzymes to their substrates and the reduced diffusion to the absorption surface of the intestine.

This retarding effect is very beneficial for diabetics. Although in healthy people, who have a normal tolerance to glucose has not yet been shown that this decrease has physiological effects, it seems that it could be beneficial as it helps to decrease the response to insulin and the expression of hepatic lipogenesis and therefore both would favour the prevention of some diseases such as type 2 diabetes or fatty liver.
