Hurricane Prep Your House for the Next Big One

by Kevin Smith Author

Depending on their category rating, hurricanes can blow up to between 75 to 150 miles per hour wreaking great destruction in their paths. Here are three projects a homeowner can take on to protect their house for the next approaching hurricane.

#1 Project – One job most homeowners can do who live in areas prone to hurricanes is to install hurricane roof clips. These galvanized brackets are one thing you can do to help keep a roof attached to the wall framing of a house. This involves getting up into the attic and attaching these specially designed clips to the roofing truss and the wall framing of the house. If the pitch of the roof is greater than 6-12, this mean the roof is open enough to move around and get close enough to work. If the roof pitch is less than 6-12, you will want to call in a company specializing in hurricane roof clip installation in Florida.

#2 Project – A more difficult project is to replace a wood or metal door with a fiberglass door. Hit with the right amount of force of debris from a storm, a wood door will shatter into pieces. And once open your home is exposed to the wet, harsh elements. A metal door will hold better than a wood door, but it will get dented beyond repair. Fiberglass doors are built tougher than wood or metal doors. They are manufactured from an ultra-dense foam core with a decorative, but tough and dent-free fiberglass covering wrapped around the foam core. Fiberglass doors should survive most storms as they are warrantied to not dent, scratch, or peel.

#3 Project – A job for which you’ll need to hire a professional is to install stormproof windows that are rated for hurricane-resistance. These windows are triple pane windows. That means there are three panes of glass not just one or two panes like most windows. Two of the glass panes are stuck together with a see-through polymer which double binds the glass together making it exceptionally storm. Stormproof windows come with different wind and hurricane category ratings. For example, windows guaranteed for a category three hurricane will be less expensive and made from lower quality materials than windows guaranteed to withstand a category five hurricane. Besides being able to withstand high, hurricane force winds, these triple pane windows also prevent thieves from breaking into your house. No matter how hard a thief hits the glass the see-through polymer holds the broken pieces of glass together preventing entry.

Whether its stormproof window, fiberglass door, or hurricane roof clip installation in Florida taking on one or all three of these projects will better prepare your house for the next storm.
