How Used Batteries are Recycled

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
The earth is dying and we need to act smart and fast to save it. Climate change has turned to a climate crisis and a recent study has shown that the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere has hit a level unprecedented in the past three million years. While the blame mostly lies on the big industries that continue to pollute the environment relentlessly, regardless of the consequences, it will require a lot of time and collective effort to bring them down. Meanwhile, what we can do as normal citizens is to cut pollution and waste production on a personal level.

You can start with maintaining your car. Get it checked for pollution control regularly, use high-quality battery such as Amaron car battery for your vehicle, if your vehicle is emitting an unusual amount of smoke then get it checked, carpool as often as possible and start using public transportation more. One other thing you can do to reduce waste is to give your old car battery for recycling. According to battery recycling companies, 99% of the battery can be recycled and here is how it happens.

  1. The first step involves breaking apart of the lead-acid batteries. All the components are separated carefully such that they aren’t damaged much.
  2. The components are further segregated according to the material they are made of. The parts made up of lead and heavy materials are separated from the plastic.
  3. The parts made of lead are converted into lead ingots. Further, these ingots are melted to form lead plates and other components of the battery that are made of lead.
  4. The plastic, which is polypropylene, is transformed into pellets. These pellets are then used to make the body and cases of the battery.
  5. The acid solution present in the battery is also recycled. It is tuned into sodium sulfate. This solution is used in the detergent, textile, and glass industry.

Instead of throwing away your old battery carelessly, get it recycled and do your bit for the environment. This practice highlights the fact that one should invest in good quality batteries as they are made up of high-quality lead, which when recycled can ensure the quality standards of the new battery. For high-quality products like Exide battery, car price can be looked up online.

When you choose to get your car battery recycled, you are doing a service not just to yourself but to the whole planet. We need to start taking concrete steps urgently otherwise this planet that we have borrowed from the future generation will be rendered unlivable, all because of our ignorance and inaction.
