How to Update your PlayStation 4 System Software

Every device runs well when its system software and drivers are up to date, either it is a phone, computer, or a gaming console. If your PlayStation fails to run a new game or you’re facing any issues with it, you should first update it. Although, if “Automatic Download and Install of PS4 System Software” is enabled in your PS4 console it will automatically update the system software. Here are the ways to update your PlayStation 4’s system software.

How to update system software in PS4 through the console itself

Before going ahead, make sure your console is connected to the internet, and it is working.

1.    Press the ‘On’ button on your console or ‘PlayStation’ button on your controller to turn on your device.

2.    On the Home screen, scroll to ‘Settings’ (toolbox-shaped icon) and select it. You’ll see Settings window on the screen with various settings options.

3.    Scroll to the ‘System Software Update’ option and select it. This option is in the middle and selecting it will prompt your console to search for the latest version firmware. If your console doesn’t have the most recent version, it will download into the system.

4.    If an application or games is running, save your game and then select the ‘Upgrade Now’ option.

5.    Wait for the software to download, and then check the License Agreement.  Click on ‘Accept’ to agree with them.

6.    Now, your system will be prepared for the updates. This may take a little time to finish your console will shut down and restart again. Updating process begins automatically after restarting.

7.    When the updating is over, your PlayStation will restart again. Once it boots up properly, hold your controller and press the ‘PlayStation’ button. Now, go to the sign in section and add your user profile to the console.

Your PlayStation 4’s system software is updated successfully.

How to update system software in PS4 through an external storage device

If your PlayStation’s system software fails to update with the above procedure, you can update it with this method. But, your system should have version 1.5 or more.

To check the version of your console:

1.    On the Home screen, scroll to ‘Settings’ (toolbox-shaped icon) and select it to open the console settings.

2.    Then select ‘System.’

3.    And choose ‘System Information.’

Instructions to update the system software with a storage device

You can use a USB flash drive or any other storage device, but remember it must be of at least 400 MB available space. You have to download the software update into the storage drive, use any computer with internet access to download it. Here is how.

1.    Open the USB drive into your computer and create a folder into it with the name ‘Update.’

2.    Visit “https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/#update-computer” to download the latest update. Make sure to store the files into the “Update” folder, and the name of the file should be “PS4UPDATE.PUP”.

3.    Now, power off your console completely.

4.    Connect the USB drive to the USB port of the console.

5.    Tap and hold the PlayStation’s ‘Power’ button for 7-10 seconds. This will power on your console into safe mode, and you’ll see some options on the display.

6.    Scroll down and select the last option ‘Initialize PS4 (reinstall system software)’.

7.    Now, follow the onscreen directions to complete updating.

Once you finish updating, your console’s system software will be updated. And you’ll be able to run games and other tasks smoothly.
