ON-PAGE SEO - META TAG OPTIMIZATION PROCESS

In my previous post, “what is seo”, I discussed what SEO is, why it is important, and how the process works in a nutshell. In this article, we’ll go over the various types of seo with an emphasis on the on-page seo & meta tags optimization process along with a case study  of my professional website. When we say different types of seo, it doesn’t indicate that these SEO types are separate tasks, rather this is a simple partition of a complex seo process into smaller sections to make the entire process easy to manage.

In general, SEO is regarded as a very common type of optimization, such as inserting focus keywords into your web pages or obtaining a large number of backlinks to your website. Although these are important aspects of SEO and must be implemented in accordance with proper SEO guidelines, there are several other factors to consider.

LET’S LIST DOWN THE TYPES OF SEO:

  • On Page SEO
  • Off Page SEO
  • Technical SEO

In this article, I will elaborate on the on-page SEO process for a more in-depth understanding on meta tags. We will discuss the remaining two types in my next blog posts. So let’s start with the on-page seo process.

On Page SEO Guidelines – On page seo is also termed as on site seo. It is primarily concerned with the page itself and focuses on how to make it more user and search engine friendly. It is a method of optimizing every single page on a website so as to rank on the top SERP (search engine result pages).

On-page SEO involves aligning web pages as per seo guidelines with the elements like meta tags (meta title & descriptions), headings tags (headings), alt image tags, website content, keywords density, anchor text and internal links to the relevant inner pages etc.

How do search queries work? When any keywords on a webpage match a search query, it is the most primary indicator that the information is relevant. The information is more likely to be relevant if those keywords appear on the page, or if they appear in the headings or in the body text. Search engine’s bots evaluate the content of web pages to determine whether the page contains information that is relevant to the search query. They use consolidated appropriate information in addition to simple keyword matching to determine if search results are relevant to queries. This information is then converted into signals that enhance the machine-learning systems in determining the search query relevancy.

STEP BY STEP ON-PAGE SEO PROCESS:

Meta Tags Optimization Process – Let’s first understand what meta tags are, why are they important in seo and how to implement them. Meta tags are HTML tags that provide relevant data about a website page to search engines. Meta tags should always be placed in the header section of a website. The information given in the meta tags are termed as metadata. This piece of information is not displayed or visible on a website content, yet it is readable to the search engine bots when they crawl your website. This metadata contains the title and description of your web page.

How to inspect Website Coding? We can inspect the website backend by pressing “ctrl + u” button on our keyboard or by right clicking and “view source”.

BELOW IS THE META TAG EXAMPLES OF MY WEBSITE “EDIGITAL SEO”

Meta Title: <title>Professional Digital Marketing Agency In Miraroad | Expert SEO Service</title>

Meta Description:<meta name=”description” content=“eDigital SEO” is a Professional Digital Marketing Agency in Miraroad, Mumbai, offering Affordable SEO Services to all business types in India & abroad./>

Example 1: Search query – business listing and seo services in mira road displays below search result in which you will see a different description changed by the search engine.

Example 2: Search query – edigital seo displays the below search result, in which you will see the exact meta description which I have given in my meta tag.

If we compare both instances, you will notice that in the first example, Google has rewritten my meta description whereas, in example 2, Google has displayed the exact meta description given in the metadata.

You might be wondering why the description in the screenshot search result differs from the metadata. Why isn’t Google displaying the meta description I provided? Why does it rewrite my meta description?

Let us understand why this happens.  If you look at both search queries, you’ll notice that the search query in my second example exactly matches my meta description, hence Google didn’t rewrite it. Whereas in the first example, Google changed my meta description as it doesn’t contain the keywords from the search query “business listing & seo services in mira road” hence google changed my meta description to match the heading of the web page.

An recent update onhow Google generates web page titles

  • Content of H1 Tag or Heading
  • Content of other Headline tags.
  • Any bold or decorative text on the page.
  • Anchor text of any links given on the page.
  • Alt attribute of images on the page

Google will regenerate Meta Tags for the websites which have:

  • Too long Title or Descriptions
  • Keywords are stuffed too much in the description or Title.
  • If the default Title isn’t matching with the search query, but the content on the page does match with the query.

Google’s John Mueller explained why Google rewrites meta descriptions in three ways.

  1. The first reason is that a meta description is poorly used to summarise a web page.
  2. The second purpose is to better match the search query with the web page when part of the search query is missing from the content.
  3. The third explanation is that Google is attempting to match the search query to the content, but there is no match in the meta description.

In the above case study, Google has displayed a different description based on the 3rd parameter of the above explanation.

I have shared best of my understanding on the (On-page SEO) meta tags optimization process. If you have any queries on this topic please do comment, I will try to answer it soon. In my next article, I will discuss the importance of optimizing headings tags (headings), alt image tags, website content, keywords ratio and internal links, & anchor text.
