How To Save Money And Energy With Your Refrigerator?

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
Unbeknownst to many of us, our electrical appliances are capable of saving a significant amount of electricity if only we take the right steps. The advent of certain technological marvels such as SUBZERO Refrigerators has made the task even easier. Knowing what to store in your fridge, and how to store it appropriately can influence the amount of energy that is consumed. Keep in mind the following steps in order to save on your monthly bills as well as play your role in contributing to the environment.

•Storing Food

It is a better idea to keep your refrigerator full because that leaves less air to cool when the space is taken up. You have to be careful not to overfill since this can hinder air circulation. Try to keep liquids covered and solid food wrapped when they are stored to prevent drying out, and to ensure that the moisture released does not cause the refrigerator’s compressor to work harder.

•Maintaining Your Refrigerator

Maintenance may seem like a task but it is an important one, because this will not only allow your refrigerator to last longer but will also save energy. Ensure that the coils behind it are cleaned regularly and do not have dust and debris to allow proper airflow. Regularly defrost the freezer as buildup can affect the energy efficiency. Make sure that there is no air leakage, and that the compressor is running properly as well.

•The Right Temperature

If the temperature of the refrigerator or freezer is set too low, it can end up using more energy. They should not be set too cold, and a temperature of 37 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit should suffice in the case of your refrigerator, and 5 degrees Fahrenheit in the case of your freezer.

•Positioning Your Refrigerator

Positioning the refrigerator strategically can help in saving energy. If it is not bound by electrical or water hook-ups, you can ensure the following. Firstly, ensure that there is proper air flow around the refrigerator. This can help it to run more smoothly and efficiently. If it happens to be stored in between cabinets or shelfs, then try to make sure that nothing stored around the unit hinders the airflow around it. They should ideally be kept away from stoves, ovens or windows. Heat, either as sunlight through the windows or from cooking appliances may cause the refrigerator to use up more of its energy in order to stay cool. The best spot for the refrigerator would be the coolest area in the kitchen.

By following these steps, good quality refrigerators should be able to save enough energy for you to be satisfied about your bills and your reduced carbon footprint.
