How To Repair a Broken Bicycle Chain

by Amisha Lohan Blogger

Cycling is the most preferred physical activity to stay healthy. But while cycling is taken up by many, only some know how to repair a bicycle if something goes wrong. Just imagine! You are stranded with a cycle whose chain is broken, and you have no repairing mechanic by your side. Well! No one wants to come in such a situation! But if you knew how to fix a broken cycle chain, you could easily fix it and would not have to walk your way home.

Check out these Cycle Repairing Methods

To fix the broken chain, you will need to take it out and remove the broken links. It requires a chain breaker tool. Thus, carrying a compact multi-tool while cycling is always a smart choice.

Reuse the Rivet

Did you know you could easily use the rivet to fix a broken bicycle chain? Here's how you can do it:

      Turn your bicycle upside down.

      Assess the chain damage.

Use the chain breaker attachment and remove all the damaged pins.

Next, use the rivet by putting it out just enough to fit the next link.

Make sure not to push it completely out.

Connect the inner link and attach the rivet back. It should let you reconnect the chain.

Because the chain was broken or bent and you removed a link, it is now shorter than the original one.

Therefore, it is better not to shift in large cassette cogs.

Note: This is just a temporary fix. But it will surely help you get home.

Use a Master Link

It could be the easiest method. You can use a master link to fix a cycle chain. Many brands make master links of cycle chains. It is always a good idea to carry a master link to stay safe.

      Turn your bike upside down.

      Assess the chain damage.

Use your multi-chain tool to remove the broken or bent link.

Ensure that both the broken ends of the chain have an inner link.

Insert the two master link plates into the broken inner links and join them.

Remember that the master link needs a good pull to fit securely into place.

Make sure to turn the cranks.

The master link has to sit above the chain stays.

Next, check by pulling the rear brake.

Lock the master links by applying pressure to the pedals.

If, while fixing the chain, you need to remove only one link, the length of the chain will remain the same. You can ride back home easily. But if you need to remove more than one link, it will shorten the length of your chain. Hence, it is better to avoid shifting into bigger cassette cogs.

How to Take Care of Your Cycle Chain

While you can always learn how to fix a cycle chain, you can also know the ways to prevent your chain from breaking in the first place.

You can keep the chain in good condition by keeping it clean and lubricated.

Oiling the chain after every few rides is important.

Occasionally, you can use degreasers available to degrease the chain.

Many cycle accessories can protect your chain and make your bike look good. Also, ensure you do not shift gears when pedalling too fast.

Conclusion

These two methods will be useful if you break or bend your cycle chain on the road. Make sure to follow the steps, and you will be riding your broken bike in no time. However, doing maintenance tasks at home or in the proper workshop is much better than doing them on the road. You can also browse cycle shops near me if you have any trouble with your bike.
