People who rushed for everything have now started to slow down, for washing hands. Eating healthy and building immunity is the trend now. Doctors are directing the things we can do to minimise our chances of getting infected. 

Preventive measures like wearing a mask, wearing gloves, washing hands, using hand sanitiser and maintaining a distance of 6 feet in public areas are practised. Even with all the precautions, there still is a chance of contracting the virus. Moreover, it is important to make sure the proper procedure for everything is followed. Germs mostly spread through hands, so sanitising them is the most important. You cannot always find soap and water; that's when hand sanitiser comes to the rescue. Using a sanitiser may seem simple, but if not used correctly, it may not fulfil its purpose, and in some cases, also become harmful.

About Hand Sanitisers

Before learning to properly use sanitiser, let us know about its working. 

Hand sanitiser is applied to the hands to kill any harmful germs or pathogens present. It ensures safety by keeping you safe from diseases or infections caused due to unclean hands. It can be used in place of soap and water, as it kills 99.99% germs instantly. The effectiveness of some sanitisers may differ, but the basic function of a sanitiser is to kill the germs. 

Now, sanitisers can be used on fabric or any other surface to decontaminate it. And due to the pandemic, they have been made available everywhere. They are mostly sold in small bottles for the user's convenience, but buying large quantities is also possible. To control pollution, refills are also available in the market. They are also produced in different fragrances and ingredients. 

Depending on the active ingredient used, they can either be alcohol-based hand sanitiser or alcohol-free hand sanitiser. Most people prefer the sanitiser containing alcohol, as it is proven to be more effective in eliminating the germs. However, non-alcoholic hand sanitisers are gentler on hands and prevent them from getting dry. Since sanitising hands have become frequent, it is also important to maintain the moisture in them. 

Apart from the gel and liquid sanitiser, foam hand sanitiser is also available. The hand sanitiser foam helps in the easy and precise application as the foam spreads smoothly, and you can keep track of all the places it has reached. Not only does it guarantee a safer application, but it also is an attractive way of enabling hygiene for kids.

Proper Application of Sanitiser

There are some basic do’s and don’ts that one must follow while using a hand sanitiser. 

Since they contain strong chemicals, you shouldn't inhale or swallow any of it and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose after the application. Most sanitisers are flammable, so make sure they are kept away from flame or direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place. Keep away from children. Use only FDA-approved sanitiser. 

Using the right amount of hand sanitiser can make all the difference. If you use too little, it may not be enough to cover both your hands. After taking a sufficient amount, make sure you rub them with both your hands and see that it covers the back of your hands, space between your fingers and their tips. If required, take some more sanitiser and rub it in for 20 seconds or till it dries completely. Don’t wipe or rinse your hands.

Even sanitiser has an expiry date. Ensure your hand sanitiser doesn't exceed the shelf life or provide adequate protection and can also cause rashes on the skin. The alcohol content gradually drops as they expiry date approaches.
