Preparation time: 5 hours

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm split green skinless moong daal
  • 2 tbsp oil for frying chillas
  • 1 small size onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • ½ inch ginger (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp roasted cumin powder (jeera powder)
  • 2 tbsp rice flour
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves (finely chopped)
  • ¼th cup crumbled or grated fresh cottage cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp green chutney (optional)
  • Salt as per taste

Method

  • Firstly soak the moong lentils in water either overnight or for 4-5 hours.
  • Strain the water, grind the daal with little water until a soft mixture is formed.
  • Add rice flour, give a nice whisk until they blend well. The batter has to be nor too thick nor too thin. So add water accordingly. Keep the mixture aside for 15-20 minutes.
  • Then add green chili, ginger, onion, coriander leaves if using, cumin powder, turmeric and salt. Mix it nicely.
  • Heat a non stick pan, pour a scoop of batter in the center and then spread it giving a round shape. It’s up to you to make the chillas thick or thin. However, thick chillas would not be crisp, so make accordingly.
  • Sprinkle some oil towards the edges and fry the moong daal chillas until crisp and golden brown from both sides.
  • You can spread some crumbled or grated cottage cheese. Then flip the chilla giving it a semi circle shape.
  • Serve your moong daal chillas warm with green chutney or tomato sauce.
